West Virginia Online Casino Market Launches With DraftKings
West Virginia is the fourth state to offer online casino games in the U.S. market after DraftKings launched its mobile gaming product line in the state.
West Virginia online gaming enthusiasts will be able to play Blackjack, Roulette, three-card poker and more by accessing DraftKings casino games through either the standalone DraftKings Casino app or through the DraftKings Sportsbook app.
West Virginia joins Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware in offering online casino games. All of those states plus Nevada offer online poker sites as well. Michigan is slated to offer both online casino and online poker some time in 2020.
West Virginia’s Path to Online Casino
West Virginia is the third state in which DraftKings is offering online casino game accessibility, joining New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
DraftKings has a partnership with Hollywood Casino at Charles Town to make its online casino product available for download on iOS or Android platforms, according to a news release on Wednesday.
”This is the culmination of a great deal of hard work and planning over the course of the last year, and we are looking forward to the licensing and approval of our other casinos and their affiliated providers when they are ready to do so,” West Virginia Lottery Director John Myers said Wednesday in a statement issued on the state’s Lottery website.
In August 2019, DraftKings launched its West Virginia sportsbook product, giving the Mountain State’s sports bettors an online option in the same week as longtime sportsbook and fantasy sports rival Fanduel. The West Virginia DraftKings sportsbook launched in partnership with Hollywood Casino at Charles Town.
Since then, BetMGM has joined DraftKings and FanDuel in offering an online sportsbook in a state that had none for several months after the BetLucky app went offline. In the 2019-20 fiscal year, which ended in June, West Virginia drew more than $257.3 million in sports betting handle, with more than half coming via online wagers.
Hollywood Casino at Charles Town is the largest land-based casino in West Virginia and offers year-round thoroughbred horse racing.
Busy Year for DraftKings
The launch in West Virginia continues a burst of activity for DraftKings around the United States.
In May, DraftKings launched its casino suite in Pennsylvania (the company added the standalone option in the Keystone State this week). Then in June, the Boston-based company introduced its standalone online casino app in New Jersey, separate from the app embedded into the New Jersey sportsbook service.
Also, DraftKings completed a merger with SBTech and Diamond Eagle Acquisition Corp. this spring. DraftKings offered its stock on the NASDAQ Global Select Market after going public.
