West Virginia Sees Drop in October Sports Betting, iGaming

West Virginia’s record pace for sports betting and iGaming didn’t hold in October.

The state’s total October sports betting handle was $44,633,016, down 42% from September, when West Virginia set a state record with $76,951,428.

The West Virginia online sports betting market also fell, from $59,247,288 in September to $26,649,938 in October.

There are a couple of factors to keep in mind when assessing this decrease. First, West Virginia computes its figures weekly rather than monthly. The September figures actually covered a five-week span from Aug. 30-Oct. 3; the October report represents a four-week period from Oct. 4-31.

But that only partly accounts for the size of the decline at top West Virginia sportsbooks. The sporting calendar also played a role.

September saw full months of the NBA and Major League baseball and the NHL playoffs ended Sept. 28, when the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup. The NBA season ended Oct. 11 with the Los Angeles Lakers being crowned champions, followed by the Los Angeles Dodgers winning the World Series on Oct. 27. That sheer decline in the number of games in major sports likely accounts for the decline in October figures even as pro and college football continued.

The top full week in October for West Virginia sports betting was the one ending Oct. 10, at $11.68 million in total handle, according to figures reported by the West Virginia Lottery. That was nowhere near the state record set on the week ending Sept. 26, when the handle reached $19.36 million.

Note: West Virginia reports numbers weekly rather than by calendar month. October represents Oct. 4-31; September represents Aug. 30-Oct. 3.

The year-over-year numbers are more encouraging for West Virginia sports betting. The October handle was up 20.6% compared to the $37,022,626 wagered in October 2019 and the mobile handle was a 60.9% increase from the October 2019 total of $16,560,650.

October’s sports betting revenue was $3,742,779, down 18.7% from September ($4,603,811) but 18.6% higher than the $3,156,830 reported in October 2019.

West Virginia iGaming Figures Dip in October

The iGaming market, still fairly new in West Virginia, saw a decline as well. The October iGaming handle was $53,130,374, down 29.0% from September’s $74,890,749. The state’s revenue from online casino gambling declined 16.9%, from $1,900,670 in September to October’s total of $1,578,527.

Again, the five-week reporting period compared to a four-week span was a factor; nonetheless, the weekly record of $17.5 million for the week ending Oct. 3 was never threatened later in the month, with three straight weeks each coming in between $12 million and $13 million in iGaming wagers.

West Virginia launched iGaming and online poker this summer. DraftKings was the first company to make a non-sports online gaming product available in The Mountain State when it offered its DraftKings Casino app, pairing with Hollywood Casino at Charles Town. Since then, BetMGM and NetEnt have entered the market via their partnership with The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs.

West Virginia became the fourth state to offer online casino gaming, joining Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey; those four states plus Nevada have online poker. Michigan is set to enter both markets within weeks.
