West Virginia sports betting is flourishing, almost doubling in September with a record-breaking month after a strong August.

With pro football and William Hill’s sports betting app starting in September, West Virginia sportsbooks reaped the rewards in September as the state had a total sports betting handle of $76.9 million, up 90.3% over August’s $40.4 million. The mobile handle was $59.247 million, also about 90% higher than August's $31.112 million.

In addition, September sports betting revenue in West Virginia more than doubled to $4.60 million, an increase of 133% over August’s $1.97 million, according to numbers posted by the state. All three numbers -- total handle, mobile handle and revenue -- were state sports betting records.

The William Hill sportsbook app and website, launched on Sept. 4, is available through a partnership with Mountaineer Casino & Racetrack in New Cumberland.

The biggest weekly handle for Mountaineer was the week ending Oct. 3, with $913,488 in total sports betting handle that week, mostly from retail. But the casino still had just over $100,000 in mobile handle in each of the final two weeks of the month to help increase numbers.

The third week in September was West Virginia’s biggest for the month as sportsbooks had $19.2 million wagered ending Sept. 26, up $5.6 million from its biggest week in August.

iGaming Continues With Strong Numbers

September was another successful iGaming month as well for West Virginia. The iGaming handle was $74.8 million (up 89.3% from August), with revenue of $1.9 million (up 242%), in just its second full month of iGaming in the state.

West Virginia went live with iGaming in mid-July with DraftKings. DraftKings and BetMGM’s mobile casino products are now active.

BetMGM launched its live casino offerings in the state Aug. 26. BetMGM is partnering with the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. DraftKings entered the state via an agreement with Hollywood Casino at Charles Town.

NetEnt, a well-known maker of online slot games, on Sept. 18 announced a partnership with BetMGM to enter the iGaming market in West Virginia.

Online casino gambling and poker are legal in West Virginia, making it one of five states — Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware are the others — with iGaming options.

West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware offer online casino games. Those four and Nevada offer online poker sites, too.
