As William Hill announced the most recent revenue figures for its “pop-up” retail sportsbook at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., it also offered a look at what the permanent book will look like once it’s up and running sometime in early 2021.

The William Hill Sportsbook has had a temporary retail operation at the home of the NBA Washington Wizards and NHL Washington Capitals since July. For September, the handle at William Hill’s Washington bookmaking operation was almost $12.2 million on a little more than 113,000 bets.

The September numbers were healthy increases in both handle and tickets from August. The jumps were 33.5% in handle (about $9.1 million in August) and 63.6% in bets (more than 69,000 in August).

D.C.’s sports betting landscape, so far, features the William Hill retail operation where bettors can wager either at a staff-manned counter or at kiosks, and an online operation (GambetDC) under the D.C. Lottery in partnership with a company named Intralot.

The DC Lottery’s online operation has been running since late May with lackluster results. The September figures for GambetDC showed a handle of $3.269 million, an increase over August's $2.13 million. In September it yielded a hold of a little more than $2.77 million on 92,315 bets. The online operation has been criticized for offering unattractive odds.

Sneak Peek at Permanent William Hill Sportsbook

Meanwhile, William Hill started the drumroll for its permanent sportsbook by releasing some details and renderings of what the place will look like. William Hill has partnered with Monumental Sports & Entertainment to offer the first sportsbook inside a professional sports complex in the United States. Monumental is a massive enterprise run by Ted Leonsis who owns the Wizards, Capitals, WNBA Mystics, other sports teams and the Capital One Arena.

The William Hill renderings in the news release depict a multi-level space with table seating, indoors and outdoors, and bar-style seating. The full-service sportsbook will feature 12 ticket windows and 10 self-service kiosks, two VIP areas and one large private dining/event space.

Like most modern sportsbooks, there will be massive TVs wrapping around the room. There also will be a radio and TV broadcast studio on the first floor. The decor will feature references to local professional teams, sports memorabilia and sketches of local arenas printed on the ceiling.

Food and drink will be an important part of the experience but, so far, specific restaurant operators have not been named. The sportsbook will be open year-round.

“The success of the William Hill pop-up sportsbook has exceeded our expectations, and we’re excited to create the next phase of the sports fan experience with our permanent location inside the Capital One Arena,” David Grolman, president of retail operations for William Hill US, said in the news release. “What we’re creating now is a game-day experience that can’t be rivaled. Offering a full-service sportsbook and restaurant, with an ambiance built around the excitement and energy of live sporting events.”

William Hill Opens PA Sportsbook

William Hill announced Thursday that it has opened a sportsbook at Harrah’s Philadelphia in Chester with six teller windows, 16 self-service kiosks and an expanded betting menu that features live, in-play wagering.

The opening of the newest Pennsylvania sportsbook marked the 14th state where William Hill operates a sportsbook, with more than 160 locations nationwide.

In late September, William Hill opened its first sportsbook in Michigan at Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel, along with a satellite location at Leelanau Sands Casino in Traverse City.

On Sept. 30, Caesars Entertainment announced it was buying William Hill for $3.7 billion. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2021. William Hill has run its online sports betting operations through Caesars' state market access and retail sports betting at Caesars' properties.
