The 2020 season kicks off Thursday night with the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs playing host to the Houston Texans. The Denver Broncos face the Tennessee Titans in Denver as the second game of Monday Night Football on Sept. 14.

“Colorado is home to some of the most dedicated sports fans in the country, who have been counting down the days until the NFL season begins,” Joe Asher, CEO of William Hill US, said in a news rlease. “We share in their excitement and look forward to introducing our mobile offerings to fans across the Centennial State.”

Former Broncos wide receiver and two-time Super Bowl champion Rod Smith placed the ceremonial first bet Wednesday, the release said. His wager was on the Broncos to win on Sept. 14, along with a prop bet that Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will score the first touchdown.

Colorado is the fifth state where William Hill’s mobile app is live, joining New Jersey, Nevada, Iowa and West Virginia. It went live in West Virginia on Sept. 4.

On July 31, William Hill opened the first sportsbook at a professional sports venue in the U.S. at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

CEO Ulrik Bengtsson acknowledged the launch in Colorado on Tuesday in a tweet:

A Lot Happening in Colorado

On Tuesday, the University of Colorado became the first NCAA school to have an official sports betting partner when it announced a five-year partnership with PointsBet.

A month ago, PointsBet announced that it reached a deal to become the official and exclusive partner of the professional teams and venue owned by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment in Colorado. The deal includes the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League and the Pepsi Center, where the teams play.

The Denver Broncos became the first NFL team to name official sports betting partners. The Broncos announced an agreement with FanDuel on June 15 and deals with Betfred and BetMGM followed.

Colorado Handle Keeps Growing

Since the May 1 launch, the number of online sports betting operators has tripled and there are now eight retail operators, according to the Colorado Division of Gaming.

The total handle wagered in July was $59.2 million, an increase of 55% over June’s $38.1 million. Of July's total, $58.6 million, or 99%, was from mobile betting. In May, its first full month, Colorado had $25.5 million in total sports handle.

August numbers should be even better as the NHL and NBA joined MLB in offering full schedules the entire month.
