Wild Kentucky Derby Impacts Early Preakness Stakes Odds

Wild Kentucky Derby Impacts Early Preakness Stakes Odds

The 145th Kentucky Derby will go down in history, but perhaps not in the way most Triple Crown betting fans would've hoped.

For the first time in the race's long history, the horse that crossed the finish line first was not declared the eventual winner.

Review Leads to Huge Upset

Maximum Security, who closed as the 9/2 favorite, was disqualified after a lengthy review by Churchill Downs stewards, as the celebrations of trainer Jason Servis, owners Joe and May West, jockey Luis Saez and Kentucky Derby betting fans were cut short.

The stewards determined that Maximum Security impeded the progress of War of Will, and thus 65-1 longshot Country House was bumped up from second place to first making the end result the biggest Kentucky Derby upset since 1913 (Donerail 91-1).

West has since confirmed that Maximum Security will not race in the upcoming Preakness Stakes and that he will be appealing the disqualification.

"We were stunned, shocked and in total disbelief. The appeal has to be filed within 48 hours so we’ll be filing that today. I think there’s no Triple Crown on the line for us. And there’s no reason to run a horse back in two weeks when you don’t have to."

Even U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in on the shocking result claiming that "political correctness" was the motive that drove officials to make the call.

So was the right decision made? Most horse racing experts believe so.

But what does that wild conclusion mean for the Preakness? It's definitely a wide-open looking race, as many would've expected Maximum Security to be a serious Triple Crown contender.

Country House the Early Favorite

There will be a lot of familiar faces from the Derby including the trio of Bob Baffert trainees (Game Winner, Improbable and Roadster) and another favorite Tacitus.

War of Will, the most affected horse by Maximum Security's foul, will run in the Preakness although his trainer was none too happy about Saturday's events.

“The horse racing world should be very happy that it happened to War Of Will. War Of Will is such an athlete, and he had the agility so that he didn’t go down. Because if he goes down it would have been the biggest disaster in horse racing. And, who knows, he probably wouldn’t be here today. (Jockey) Tyler Gaffalione might not have been here today. And who knows how many others would have gone down after him. I never for a second felt sorry for myself. I was just happy that I still have him.”

Despite his long odds in the Derby, Country House is considered an early favorite as he will likely try to find success similar to the most recent major longshot to win the race.

Back in 2009 when Mine that Bird was ridden to victory at Churchill Downs to pull off a 50-1 upset that shocked the racing world. He followed that up with a second-place finish in the Preakness and a respectable third-place finish in the Belmont Stakes.

The Damage Done

According to ESPN's David Purdum the disqualification cost bettors up to approximately $9 million.

While only $520,907 was bet on Country House to win, around $6.2 million was bet on Maximum Security to pull it off. That goes with $1,495,408 for the favorite to place and $1,272,082 to show.

The biggest bet on Maximum Security, $8,000, would have paid $36,000, while the biggest bet made at TwinSpires, $2,500, payed out a whopping $162,500.
