23-year-old heptathlete Karla Drew managed to transform a £5 accumulator bet into £50,054 when all ten of her results came up trumps. The lucky 100m hurdler, who beat odds of 10,000 to one, is also one of a number of athletes who are mentored by Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Karla had placed the 10-fold accumulator on a number of midweek international football friendlies. She was nervous when she went to bed that night, as while a number of the results had already come in, including England beating rivals Scotland 3-1, there were still two matches to finish. She even tweeted before she went to sleep: “Sooo.. I could wake up £50,000 richer tomorrow. Uruguay win & Panama draw. Won't be sleeping. @FootyAccums.”

However, she was unable to sleep, so kept her phone with her in bed as the last minutes of action ticked by. As she explained, "I was going to go to sleep before the final results came in but I was just too excited so I carried on refreshing the scores in bed. I only started to really believe I would do it with about 10 minutes to go of the Panama vs Canada game. I still can’t believe I have won!"

The student was delighted when her last two bets fell her way. Double World Cup champions Uruguay managed to beat South American rivals Chile 2-1, while Central American side Panama managed to hold on for a draw with the Canadians.

Drew, who studies at Sheffield Hallam University, revealed that the money will be a big help to her education as she is not able to claim for any student support. Speaking about the win, she said, "This is a life-changing win for me. Being an MSC student, I’m not entitled to any Student Loan. I want to continue my studies and do a PhD in Sports Psychology and this will enable me to realise my dream.”

Charlie McCann, Director of Public Relations for BetVictor (who paid out the win), said: "Karla acknowledged on Twitter that she faced a sleepless night on Tuesday knowing that eight of her ten selections were winners but she need not have worried."
