Euro 2016 Finals Betting Preview: Portugal vs France

The final of Euro 2016 is set and France will now have to take on Portugal in an effort to claim the championship trophy in front of their home crowd.

As ever, the betting markets are buzzing with activity in the lead up to the 10 July finale. To make sure you're well prepared for the onslaught of odds and action, we've compiled a pre-game preview just for you.

Portugal Upsetting the Odds

Portugal has been far from the most impressive team during Euro 2016, but the results stand and the team is now just one match away from becoming the European champions.

Lacklustre draws against Iceland, Austria and Hungary didn't bode well for Fernando Santos' side in the early rounds, but a win against Croatia was enough to break the streak of draws. Unfortunately it was back to the drawing board against Poland when it took a penalty shootout to see who would make it through to the semi-finals.

But when the chips were down and the Portuguese team needed to prove its worth against the Welsh, it shone. Despite Wales adopting a defensive strategy and playing on the back foot for much of the match, Portugal's players did what they needed to in order to secure the win.

A sublime header from Ronaldo, followed by a sweet strike from Nani not only broke the Welsh, but reconfirmed the threat Portugal's deadly duo poses if they get some space. Before Euro 2016 got underway, Portugal were tipped as 20/1 outsiders, so for them to get this far is a testament to their resilience.

France on Fire Ahead of Final

It might have taken a thunderous penalty from Antoine Griezmann to break the deadlock, but there's no doubt that France deserved the win. While the French might not have set the tournament alight in the group stages, the players seemed to have the magical touch when it came to the crunch.

Whether it was simply a matter of timing and pressure or their home advantage, the French team has done just enough in each match to come out on top.

According to the odds, France entered the tournament as the 3/1 favourites and, while the market swung towards Germany in the group stages, they will start the final on top thanks to their strength in the later rounds.

Where to Draw the Line

Surveying the stats out there in the online sports betting world, many of the top bookies are in agreement when it comes to odds on France winning Euro 2016.

Regardless of how they're expressed, NetBet Sports is offering even money on France to beat Portugal in the final. Of course, as we've already noted, Portugal appear to have perfected the art of the draw this summer and that could open up some interesting betting possibilities.

Betting on a straight draw with Coral Sports will provide you with a 11/5 return on your money if Portugal can nullify the advances of Griezmann, Dimitri Payet and Olivier Giroud.

However, if you're prepared to take more of a chance and predict the scoreline, 0-0 and 1-1 are 11/2 and 5/1 respectively at Coral Sports which, given previous results, could represent some interesting value.

Who's the Real Hotshot?

If you're looking to take your predictions to a more specific level, France vs Portugal is going to be as much of a battle between Griezmann and Cristiano Ronaldo as it is a national showdown.

The two hotshots are always a threat in front of goal and NetBet is currently offering 7/2 on Griezmann to score first and 9/2 on Ronaldo to open the scoring.

Looking back to our pre-tournament review of players to watch at Euro 2016, Ronaldo was highly tipped thanks to an international record that included 126 appearances, 20 assists and 58 goals. However, despite that form, the world's top rated player has only managed three goals heading into the final.

In contrast, Griezmann has banged in six goals en route to the finale, which would seem to suggest he's set to at least come close against Portugal. Of course, if you're not confident that Ronaldo or Griezmann will score first, then 11/5 and 7/4 for either to score at anytime are bets worth looking at.

Who Wins and When?

For something completely different, Ladbrokes is currently offering 101 'Euro2016 Finals' bets and one of the most interesting is the method of victory.

Although it's true France have been dispatching their opponents within 90 minutes, Portugal have proved they can contain teams. If they can manage this in the final, then a bet on the match to be decided in extra time or on penalties could be a profitable one.

Sizing up Ladbrokes' odds, you can currently ante-up at the following prices when you follow our secure link:

  • France to win in ET = 9/1
  • Portugal to win in ET = 14/1
  • France to win on penalties = 8/1
  • Portugal to win on penalties = 8/1

Regardless of what you bet on or where your preferences lay, the final of Euro 2016 looks set to be an interesting affair. So, to add some extra spice to the match and take advantage of all the best bets out there, make sure to head over to NetBet Sports today!
