James DeGale vs Rogelio Medina 2016 Betting Preview

James DeGale vs Rogelio Medina 2016 Betting Preview

Boxing fans have been treated to a host of top heavyweight fights recently, but this weekend it's the turn of the super-middleweight division to take centre stage as IBF world champion James DeGale takes on Rogelio Medina at the D.C. Armory in Washington.

Champion Strong Favourite to Continue Run

This will be the second time that DeGale defends the IBF title. He won it last May when he defeated Andre Dirrell by unanimous decision. He defended his title with a victory by the same method over Lucian Bute in November.

The 30-year-old is now back in America to face Medina, looking to extend his run of 12 successive wins. DeGale has not lost a fight since his narrow defeat to fellow Brit George Groves five years ago and is heavily favoured to rack up another win on Saturday night.

The 2008 Olympic champion is 1/20 with several bookies while noted bookie William Hill Sports has him as short as 1/25.

DeGale Wary of His Opponent

Medina, the 27-year-old Mexican, is on a good run of his own, having won his last four fights by knockout. The most recent of those was in May of last year, when he knocked out Samuel Miller in the second round, but he has yet to face anyone of DeGale's calibre.

His opponent is nevertheless respectful of Medina's record in the ring:

"Medina is a good fighter. Just look at his record. You can say he has lost a few times, but he has also knocked out 30 opponents in a professional ring, so he is no mug," said DeGale.

If you fancy backing the underdog, Medina is 10/1 with Bet365 Sports to cause an upset.

Sights Set on Dominance

For DeGale, this bout represents the next step towards him becoming the undisputed super-middleweight champion. Should he win, the six-foot Londoner will next face the winner of the fight between Badou Jack and Lucian Bute, which takes place on the same bill.

Jack currently holds the WBC title, so victories for both men could set up a showdown back in the UK in September to decide the undisputed world champion. Speaking with The Mirror, DeGale explained:

"Once I beat Medina on 30th April, I want the unification fight in London in front of my home people. I'm ready to go as soon as. I'm going to come through this with no bumps or swellings, so September I will be ready and that would be perfect."

Should he achieve dominance in the 168-pound class, DeGale is considering then moving up a division to light-heavyweight to fulfil his dream of becoming double world champion.

Bookies Expecting a Short Fight

Paddy Power Sports is offering betting markets on the method and round of victory, with a straightforward win for DeGale looking the most likely outcome. At time of writing, the Brit is 2/5 to win by knockout or technical knockout, while he is 9/4 to earn another victory by decision.

Medina, on the other hand, is 12/1 to knock DeGale out, and 33/1 to win by decision. For those who like to back the unlikely outcome of a draw, William Hill is currently offering the best odds of 33/1.

British boxing is enjoying a golden period at the moment, boasting two heavyweight champions in Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, as well as title-holders in several other divisions. It looks like British fans will have another win to celebrate on Saturday night, with the fight taking place at 3am local time.
