JLT Novices' Chase Tips
- Back Defi Du Seuil to win at 7/2 with 888 Sport
- Back Kildisart each-way at 10/1 with RedZone
In the JLT Novices' Chase's short history it has been farmed by Irish trainers, but if the Cheltenham betting is to be believed, that's about to change.
First run in 2011, the Grade 1 has been won six times by Irish trainers since Noble Prince landed the spoils for Paul Nolan under champion jockey Sir AP McCoy in the inaugural running.
Only Jonjo O’Neill, who trains local to the famous Cheltenham course, has broken that run of Irish dominance when Tarquin du Seuil, again ridden by the now retired McCoy took the race in 2014.
This year’s renewal of the race, registered as The Golden Miller, is surprisingly dominated by British-trained horses, Lostintranslation and Defi Du Seuil heading the JLT Novices' Chase betting. It might be sensible to ignore the usual requirements due to this shift, but regardless, this running appears a very open contest from a punting perspective.
JLT Novices’ Chase Details
The JLT Novices’ Chase is a 2m4f Grade 1 for novices run on the New Course at Cheltenham and takes place each year on Thursday, as the opening race on the third day of the Festival.
It is worth £84,405 to the winner and ideally suits horses that are considered more stamina-laden than an Arkle Novices' Chase contender - that Grade 1 run over a sharper 2 mile trip - or those considered too quick for an RSA Chase, which is run over slightly further than 3 miles.

JLT Novices’ Chase Betting Tips
There is plenty to be learnt from the first eight running’s of the JLT Novices’ Chase and its relation to the betting market in the run up to the race and on the day itself.
At present only a handful of the considered front runners in the market have achieved the usual pre-race official rating of 144+ from the official handicapper, and they are headed by Lostintranslation and Defi Du Seuil, although neither are trained in Ireland which would usually be a strong positive when trying to back the winner.
It will come as no shock then that these two horses head the betting for the JLT Novices' Chase and are confirmed to be on target for the race, rather than take in other options available to connections at the four day Festival.
They have already faced each other in both of their last two starts and are with a win a piece from those match ups so it makes sense they would be joint favourites at 3/1 the pair at the time of writing.
What the JLT Novices’s Chase trainers say:
>> Colin Tizzard, trainer of Lostintranslation
"Whatever he does this year, I see him as a Gold Cup horse for next year - he is more about stamina than speed, but the JLT Novices' Chase is going to be the target this year. He was slightly done for speed at Sandown, but that won't happen at Cheltenham because there will be plenty more horses in the race and the stamina should come into play a bit more - he is a lovely horse for the future."
>> Ben Pauling, Trainer of Kildisart
“He’s become quite a decent little horse. His jumping can still improve a bit as he can get in close to a couple of them. He doesn’t seem to lose an enormous amount of momentum, however.”
>> Phillip Hobbs, trainer of Defi De Seuil
"I'm obviously over the moon to see him back towards his best. There's probably still improvement to come in his jumping."
Horse-By-Horse JLT Novices’ Chase Guide
Tizzard Seeks Festival Glory with Lostintranslation
Lostintranslation is trained by Colin Tizzard who has been very used to Cheltenham Festival success in recent years although his seven-year-old was well-beaten in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last year behind Summerville Boy and despite winning at the track since on New Years Day some will see that run as a negative ahead of a tilt at the JLT. Rightly positioned at the top of the market and will be a popular winner.
Defi Can Deliver for Hobbs Team
Defi De Seuil was a very impressive winner of the Triumph Hurdle in 2017 and followed that up with success at Aintree, stamping himself as a stable star for trainer Phillip Hobbs and prolific Cheltenham Festival-winning owner JP McManus - as well as being regarded as the leading juvenile of his generation.
However, a disappointing season followed for Defi De Seuil in 2017/18 with three consecutive defeats as a hurdler that coincided with a poor season for most of Phillip Hobbs’ string.
He has made great strides as a chaser since and with that strong Festival form in the book and a return to form for a usually powerful yard it’s very likely he will come out on top in a field which perhaps lacks the usual quality of the race in years gone by.
Real Steel Representing Respected Mullins
Of the Irish runners it seems Willie Mullins will rely on the seemingly solid credentials of his six-year-old chaser Real Steel. A fall on his chase debut at Leopardstown was quickly forgotten with wins at Fairyhouse and Thurles after Christmas and, although he lacks the official rating seemingly required to win this race, you can’t write off a Mullins-trained contender for JLT Novices' Chase.
Kildisart: Little Horse With Bright Future
With other Irish trained runners seemingly set firm for the RSA Chase and the Arkle as first preference it might be that the JLT is set for an English trained 1-2-3 and Ben Pauling’s Kildisart fits the bill to pick up the pieces from behind and grab some place money.
Kildisart is now rated 147 after a taking win over course and distance at the Cheltenham January meeting and that was following a tough performance at Ascot prior to Christmas. At prices of around 8/1 now he still represents some each-way value if you are not getting involved with the two market leaders.
