New York Giants Storylines
The true identity of a football team is usually formed in the second quadrant of the season. While some tinkering and maybe a win streak can still happen, bad teams usually stay bad and vice-a-versa with good teams.
The Giants have offered no hope that their 1-6 record is anything other than their true identity. They traded CB Eli Apple and DL Damon Harrison ahead of their game vs. Washington.
Even when one thing appeared to go well, such as in last week’s 23-20 loss to Atlanta, it was countered with multiple negatives. Eli Manning had one of his best games of the season – 399 yds & 1 TD – Saquon Barkley had one of his worst.
The Giants lone bright spot came up short on the ground, just 43 yards and a score. The team will have to battle the division leader this weekend with fans contemplating whether they should trade Manning, not to mention the continued drama surrounding their leading WR Odell Beckham Jr. and the media.
Sterling Shepard picked up slack last week catching 5 balls for 167 yards. This is far from the old case of throwing out the records when two divisional rivals meet. It’s going to take way more than familiarity to beat the Redskins.
New York Giants Storylines
If you take out the head scratching Week 2 loss to the awful Colts, Washington has taken care of business against every bad team. The Redskins are playing good football, winners of two straight, and have clearly found the fountain of youth.
Alex Smith and Adrian Peterson are showing little signs of aging. Both with solid performances in their recent 20-17 win over Dallas, Smith throwing for 178 yds and a TD, and Peterson rushing for 99 yards on 24 carries.
The Giants have so many holes in their defense, the Redskins should be drooling at the opportunities. Washington expects RB Chris Thompson back this week. He sat out the last two games with injuries to his knee and neck.
Giants vs Redskins Major Injuries
The biggest news to the roster came with two trades -- Eli Apple and Damon Harrison -- not so much the current health of the Giants. The newest addition to the injury report is MLB Alec Ogletree (hamstring) who could miss Sunday’s game.
The Redskins are on a bye following this game, so it might be smart for the team to sit him. G Patrick Omameh has been limited with a knee. If he can’t go it’s another blow to an awful offensive line. Backup WR Russell Sheppard has been dealing with a neck injury.
A healthy Thompson in the backfield along with Peterson is ideal for Washington, which is hoping to get Thompson back after missing the last two weeks with an injury to his knee and neck.
He hasn’t been productive since Week 1 – 5 carries for 65 yards – so don’t expect a ton of work for him. CB Quinton Dunbar is still working through nerve damage in his shin. The team is hoping Dunbar can be active on Sunday after being inactive last week.
Giants vs Redskins Betting Tips and Picks
Here are some things for NFL betting fans to consider in this matchup:
Eli Manning is actually having a pretty good year, statistically speaking, it’s just lost in the W-L record of the team. If you take stock in some advanced stats, he’s having the best year in his career so far in QB rating, INT % and is on pace to throw a career low in INT.
With all of that said, the team is 1-6. Washington has found a consistent running game with Peterson, and it returns another back. Smith has done exactly what the Redskins ask of him -- don’t be the reason why they lose.
He won’t have to worry about that on Sunday, as the Redskins will walk away with this one. Take Washington at 888Sport.
Karamba has the over/under at 42, and this is one of those perfect scenarios in which one team’s defense is so good at keeping other teams out of the end zone, and the other team’s offense seems to have forgotten what the end zone looks like.
The Giants just don’t score points, limping into Sunday at 19.6 PPG, and the Redskins limit teams to just 20.2 PPG. Great mixture here for the under to hit. Even though the Giants are allowing 26.4 PPG, the Skins aren’t lighting up the scoreboard averaging just 21 PPG. Bet the under with Karamba.
Total TDs Scored
888Sport has the over/under on TDs at 3.5 for a price of -278, and Smith doesn’t have to be Tom Brady out there on Sunday for this number to hit the over.
If you look at it logically, you only need 3 TD from Washington against a Giants defense that’s just begging you to score on them. The Giants haven’t been able to do much on offense, but asking Manning and Barkley to just get one score shouldn’t be TOO much… right?
Barkley even got into the end zone last week after being shut down for the day. Both teams can easily combine to hit this over while staying under the total of 42. Look for a 24-10 win by Washington. Bet over 3.5 TDs at -278 with 888Sport.
