Triumph Hurdle Tips

We look to have a vintage Triumph Hurdle renewal on the cards this at this year's Cheltenham Festival. Most of the names at the head of the market have solidified their place with convincing recent performances. Gordon Elliot will be represented very strongly in a race that has served him well in the past.

Last year's winner was gifted the prize, so will Gary Moore settle old scores with Nassalam or maybe Alan King has another Katchit in the making with Tritonic. The big spending owners, Noel and Valarie Moran, of current favourite Zanahiyr have invested heavily in the Elliot stable in search of their first success at Prestbury Park. The famous colours of Cheveley Park Stud will be carried by unbeaten stablemate Quilixios, so stakes are high.

Triumph Hurdle Details

A Grade one event for juvenile hurdlers, open to horses transferring from the flat. It's run on the new course over a two miles and one furlong distance. The Triumph Hurdle is a championship curtain raiser on the fourth and final day of the festival, with the winning connections collecting a first prize of £52,753.

Triumph Hurdle Betting Tips

The current race favourite Zanahiyr at 5/2 with Bet365, is a giant in both stature and reputation, who has flat speed, experience and an unbeaten record over obstacles. All his wins though have come at right-handed tracks. Quilixios however has won going left-handed track and a Grade one event in the process. Another from the Elliot team is Duffle Coat, who although hasn’t been seen since November, has won at Cheltenham and the form of that race is rock solid, he does hold a couple of other entries in March.

Willie Mullins has French Aseel who they snapped up after a facile win on debut at Leopardstown. Adagio and Tritonic both have solid credentials and the Triumph appears their first preference.

Horse-By-Horse Triumph Hurdle Guide

Elliots Strong Hand

The market prefers Zanahiyr who has been faultless, but Quilixios has more experience and deeper level of form. Their trainer knows what it takes to win this race, so that’s a major plus and also has course winner Duffle Coat.

French Aseel The Deal?

Connections of Kemboy are chasing more festival success and wasted no time in picking up this French bred winner after his debut win for Ellmarie Holden, he hadn't raced beyond a mile in France but really impressed at Leopardstown and although the form is ordinary, he won as he liked and is a real unknown quantity.

King Got The Tonic?

Alan king has enjoyed plenty of success in this race but 2012 was the last time he was involved in the finish, Tritonic however can change that. He hit the line strong on hurdling debut at Ascot recently and this fine scopey son of Sea The Moon was no back number on the level (Rated 99).

Can Pipe Triumph?

Adagio is held by Duffle Coat but he appears to have improved since that one and only defeat. He has shown that he also copes with any ground and is looking to give his trainer a first win in this race.

Compensation For Moore?

I think we all had a jaw drop moment when Goshen crashed out at the last with the race at his mercy last year, but Gary Moore is back to try rectify that with Nassalam. He won his first two hurdle races very easily but albeit no match for Adagio at Chepstow last time, he certainly wasn’t disgraced.

The Verdict

As I mentioned at the beginning of the piece, we have in my opinion a vintage renewal this year. Gordon Elliot has a monster duo both heading up the market and deservedly so. However, I am looking a bit further down the pecking order at Tritonic. His technique at Ascot was good in a well run race and he gave generously for pressure under retained rider Adrian Heskin.
