American McGee is most famous for his dark take on Lewis Carroll’s classic tale Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in his famed video game "Alice" - the inspiration behind Ash Gaming's Adventures in Wonderland slot game - but when McGee developed Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, he recast Red Riding Hood in ancient Japan as she battled against armies of demons.
The video game, crafted by Spicy Horse, has an incredibly exciting accompanying online video slot that bears the same name and was developed by Odobo. The 5-reel, 25-payline slot took McGee’s dazzlingly dark and detailed artwork and thrusted it right into the game, completed with stylised violent stabs of demon blood.
It also borrowed heavily from the video game’s immersive soundtrack, conjuring up a sense of feudal Japan. All in all, this slot played out like a video game in the sense some players tended to forget they are even wagering as the gameplay and special effects blurred the lines of slots and video games.
Dig deep into the folklore of Akaneiro's world and get ready to engage in combat. Loads of the characters from the video game appear in this online slot, including the titular character of Akaneiro, who was a 2x wild symbol. The other wild was a stamp symbol, while the ten other standard symbols included major demon monsters Spineripper and Ushi Oni.
Where some slots use the J, Q, K, and A symbols or even fruits symbols like cherries and lemons to fill the blanks, Akaneiro: Demon Hunters marries the symbols to minor characters or instruments from the game to create the whole Akaneiro experience. These familiar graphics combined with the epic sound track and gory blood splats thrusts players right into the Akaneiro's world in ancient Japan.
Developer Odobo has taken elements from the fantastical video game, like shards of karma crystals, and turned them into the triggers for free spins or the bonus games. If you landed three or more blue shards, it triggered a bonus round where you can pick one of four available characters, each hiding a multiplier, which can reach up to an amazing 100 times the initial stake. In addition, landing the red karma shards on reels 1, 3, and 5 gifted the player with 10 free spins.
The video game-like slot title features 5-reels and a total of 25 paylines. The paylines can be toggled for players uninterested in placing bets on all 25 paylines. Considered a low-variance or "grinder" slot, Akaneiro: Demon Hunters was developed for those players more interested in the gameplay than taking home a life-changing some from one spin.
*In June of 2016, Odobo, the developers of Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, shut their doors. Unfortunately, this meant all Odobo games were taken offline and are no longer accessible, including this topnotch title.
