Sportempire was initially established in 2018 under the ownership of Shark 77 Ltd. This gaming operator is based in Malta and licensed and operated by the Malta Gaming Authority (MTA). The regulatory body is one of the most experienced in the industry so Sportempire is in good hands for its licensing.
This site offers a basic sports betting service which has the potential to grow in New Zealand. Despite the absence of some common elements found elsewhere, the site is still a good destination for your sports betting. Betting basics function well and the structure is in place to enhance the service in time.
|Relatively generous welcome bonus||Lack of any betting market on horse racing|
|Betting on over 20 mainstream sports||Limited sports for cash out|
|Live betting interface with cash out facility|
|Comprehensive Esports betting service|
|Responsible gaming measures|
Newly registered account holders residing in New Zealand can enjoy a $100 welcome offer which comes in the form of a 100% match deposit bonus. The minimum deposit is $10 and the maximum bonus is $100. This offer is subject to wagering requirements of 12 times the bonus which expires after 21 days. Bets using the bonus must be placed at odds of 1.80 to 5.00. Any winnings using the bonus do not include the stake. The bonus is subject to Sportempire’s general Terms & Conditions and activated by the optional Sportempire bonus code. Some betting markets do not count towards the wagering requirements, specifically in the NHL and NBA. There is no qualifying bet as the bonus is linked to the first deposit.
As a relatively new sports betting operator trying to gain market share in New Zealand, Sportempire is not investing in ongoing bonuses and any free bet for existing customers. New casino players can claim a 100% welcome bonus up to $500 but at the time of the Sportempire review, no sportsrelated promotions complemented the welcome bonus.
Existing customers cannot claim any free bets but a Sportempire review in the future may see a different scenario. Once the brand becomes established, there could be spending on sport and event-specific free bets and bonuses. There is no free bet that requires a qualifying bet.
‘Sports’ is the first option on the main menu on the Sportempire betting site homepage. The page displays the current promotions and main betting events of the day. Customers can select from live or pre-match betting events. Football appears prominently because it is the most popular betting sport. The most bet on competition is the English Premier League. Sportempire displays the match result market and a link to over 250 additional markets.
The ‘SHOW ALL’ menu displays the complete range of sports betting categories of which there are over 40. Kiwi bettors are well catered for with regards to cricket, rugby league and rugby union betting. There are markets for the main professional leagues in North America: NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. Customers can also bet on global sports such as golf, tennis, boxing and motorsport. Niche European sports are also covered, including futsal, volleyball and handball.
In addition to the regular sports, New Zealanders can also place wagers on eSports, Virtual Sports, Politics and TV and Entertainment Specials. Across all the betting categories the most bet on markets are the game winner, totals, handicaps and Asian handicaps. One negative is the absence of any betting market on horse racing which is popular in New Zealand. A future development could be the introduction of a racebook that focuses on this sport.
The following features enhance the experience on this New Zealand-facing sports betting site:
‘Live Betting’ is the second option on the Homepage. Live events are displayed in several ways:
• Event View
The most popular sports for live betting are football, tennis and eSports. There is no live streaming or an animation of the progress of play and the range of markets is limited. Live betting is an area for improvement but the site has the structure and platform to develop this service.
Live bettors located in New Zealand can cash out bets on selected markets in football and American football games. The service should be extended to other sports and more markets soon. This facility allows live bettors to close a bet and take the profit or limit the loss before the end of the game. Cash out values are based on the original bet and the market at the time of the cash out request.
Customers navigate to a betting market and click the odds which activates the Bet Slip. As more selections are made, Sportempire displays the potential bets: Single, Combo or System. Customers select the type of bet, enter the stake and place the bet. In some cases, the bet is referred to traders. However, Sportempire usually confirms the bet and updates the account balance accordingly
Potential new account holders in New Zealand visit the site Homepage and click ‘REGISTER’. As you would expect of a gaming sire licensed by the MGA, there is an identity verification process to prevent money laundering and abuse. New customers must confirm they are 18 or older and accept the site’s general Terms & Conditions. The registration procedure includes specifying a Username and Password, entering the bonus code and populating a number of required fields. New players create an account and deposit funds to activate the welcome bonus.
Payment methods are limited to Visa and Mastercard, Skrill and Neteller and the Paysafecard. Deposits are free and immediate and withdrawals may have a service fee and are subject to standard delays of 1-2 days. The minimum deposit and withdrawal value is $10 and the maximums depend on the provider and the betting profile of the individual.
This Sportempire site is pleasing to the eye and is well laid out and not difficult to navigate. The current menu, banner and links structures make for efficient movement to preferred areas of the site. The main betting sports feature prominently and the new customer and any ongoing promotions are displayed prominently. Live betting and cash out facilities should be enhanced in the future. At the time of the Sportempire review, the desktop version of the service performs effectively with no major flaws. There is no downloadable app but the website can be installed on mobile devices and the service replicates the desktop computer version of the operation.
The browser version of the app compensates for the lack of a downloadable app for iPhone and Android devices. This service is easy to transfer to smartphones and tablets as long as the browser is correctly optimised. Mobile users cannot claim a mobile-specific free bet or bonus but they do benefit from the standard welcome bonus and ongoing promotions introduced in the future.
This table shows the margins for the main betting market for three of the most popular sports:
|Football||Match winner after 90 minutes||105.37%|
|Cricket||Winner of a Test match||106.33%|
|Tennis||2-way match winner||108.17%|
Sportempire offers about average value in the odds across the main betting sports. The odds are displayed in decimal format by default, but this can be changed to fractional, American, Malay, Hong Kong and Indo formats by choosing from a drop-down menu.
Customers who reside in New Zealand can contact Sportempire by email, Live Chat and telephone. The 24/7 service is enhanced by an FAQ section that covers the main account management and sports betting elements of the site. If support staff are not available, customers can leave a request to be contacted by email at the earliest possible time which is within a few hours at worst.
When this Sportempire review was completed, there was no evidence of a structured VIP scheme or loyalty package of promotions. The relatively new operator promote the service in other ways. As the brand becomes more established in New Zealand, bettors could enjoy the benefits of VIP and loyalty programmes. The site has the potential to develop and introduce these incentives in the future but Sportempire currently focuses on getting the basics right.
Responsible gambling is one area in which Sportempire compares favourably with other operators serving the New Zealand market. There is a footer link to this section which offers control measures such as age verification, deposit limits, questionnaire, self-exclusion.
There are banner links to bodies in New Zealand that provide problem gambling support.
Sportempire is more about potential than providing a complete sports betting experience. However, the welcome bonus is transparent, achieveable and relatively lucrative. The lack of some key features and limited cash out and mobile options could be rectified soon.
Shark 77 Ltd operates a number of casino brands so sports betting is a departure from the core product. The site is in partnership with leading software suppliers to the gaming industry whose brands have won industry awards and have sponsorship deals with professional sporting clubs. This Sportempire review has identified a brand with the potential to follow suit.
There are over 40 betting categories for players in New Zealand.
One of the deposit currencies is the New Zealand dollar.
There is no downloadable app for iPhone and Android devices but there is a browser mobile version of the site.
Customers with Sportempire can bet in a safe and secure online environment.
There are delays of 1 to 2 days associated with the withdrawal methods.
Sportempire is licensed and regulated by the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA).
"I've worked in the betting industry on product, operations and customer service for several years. A class operator will deliver on many aspects and we cover them all."
