Last weekend one lucky Liverpool fan managed a near-impossible feat, by correctly predicted the results of 14 games across several leagues. According to football365.com, the punter was celebrating a major win after the sheer number of winning games meant that his initial £5 wager paid out over £80,000, with total odds in excess of 16,000 to 1.
By Saturday afternoon, 12 of the results had come through, although it was not without some stress. Wolverhampton only managed to best Blackpool with two late goals in the 86th and 90th minute strikes. There was an even closer result between Fulham and Reading, where striker Bryan Ruiz managed to take The Cottagers to a 2-1 win with a goal in the 93rd minute.
The 13th game saw Southampton successfully beat Newcastle 2-1, leaving the nervous punter with only one result to complete the 14-fold accumulator. Despite that shaky start, West Ham managed to pummel Hull City 3-0 with goals from Andy Carroll, Morgan Amalfitano and Stewart Downing, completing the accumulator bet in full. As the lucky gambler said: “It’s fair to say I had a pretty restless night on Saturday and it was even worse during that first half as West Ham were getting battered, but thankfully they won and now I’m thinking about whether to move house and where to go on holiday.”
The punter, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said: “I always watch the scores come in on Soccer Saturday, with Liverpool in there every time, and when Fulham’s goal came up on the Videprinter I knew I was going to win it. I decided not to cash out on Saturday evening as I was confident West Ham would beat Hull, although I couldn’t bring myself to celebrate until the final whistle.”
The bookmaker, who has undeniably taken a thrashing with this massive win, commented: “Hats off to the punter but they could have picked a better weekend to nail such an audacious accumulator, with his remarkable win adding to an already woeful weekend for bookmakers. Each of the 10 best backed teams won on Saturday, which is, fortunately for us, extremely rare.”
