Betway Bonanza Pays Out a Million to Kenyan Soccer Fans

After just four months of operating in Kenya, Betway Sports has paid out over one million Kenyan Shillings to two lucky players.

The online betting site, which made a move into the Kenyan market last October, has seen two players score impressive wins in its Soccer Bonanza promotion. Soccer jackpot promotions are a constant fixture on the site, thanks to Betway's passion for all things soccer, though recently the operator has moved to add more guaranteed prizes to its Bonanza giveaways.

Soccer Success for Kenyan Punters

Based on accumulator-style betting, whereby entrants have to correctly predict the outcome of more than one match, this particular Bonanza promotion asked soccer fans to pay a small entry fee and speculate on six matches. Any paying contestant who achieved a success rate of at least four correct picks out of six matches was eligible for a prize.

Players Gachi Mbugua, who works at Dagoretti High School in Kenya, and Don Otieno, a prison officer, both struck lucky while playing in the promotion, though it wasn't until they received a phone call from Betway that they realised they'd scored the top betting prize. Thanks to his four correct picks, Otieno pocketed Ksh 500,000, while Mbugua banked Ksh 1,000,000 after accurately predicting five of the six designated soccer matches.

When a representative for Betway called him, Otieno assumed it was a scam and turned off his phone and went back to work. Fortunately, Otieno eventually returned Betway's call and was shocked to find out that he'd won a substantial cash prize.

"I could not believe it at first. I thought it was just a scam from the usual con-men who go about stealing from Kenyans. But after receiving the confirmation text and a call from Betway I knew it was real," said Otieno.

Betway a Burgeoning Betting Platform

Although Kenya is still a relatively small iGaming market, Betway is currently enjoying impressive growth across the country, and the latest jackpot winners are evidence of this.

Betway's move into Kenya is part of its effort to offer more casino, poker, and sports betting options to a global audience. Based in Malta and active across a host of European countries, including England, Germany and Denmark, Betway has attracted a lot of attention in recent years thanks to a string of high-profile sponsorship deals.

As well as sponsoring the title boxing match between Carl Froch and George Groves, Betway is the current shirt sponsor of West Ham United of the EPL. Outside the sporting arena, Betway also hit the headlines in October 2015 when it paid out a world record slots jackpot worth £13.2 million.

Although the Kenyan Betway Bonanza winners didn't bank quite as much as the anonymous slots player, their wins are still impressive and a testament to Betway's growing reputation as a global bookmaker.
