Paddy Power Opens Extensive Betting Market on North Korea

If there was one online bookmaker that was favourite to stir up some dark-humoured banter with the infamous North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-Un, it was always likely to be Paddy Power. And true to the cause, Paddy has gone and done just that.

Ireland's top bookie has recently unveiled a book of North Korea Special bets and odds. For those wishing to place either a serious or fun political bet on the leadership of the world's most reclusive nation, Paddy Power has made it possible!

Paddy Power Unleashes Its Latest Political Market

Paddy Power's bookmaker isn't new to controversy when it comes to creating betting markets based on big political figures. In fact, the firm already has in-running markets based on Donald Trump and family. Some of the markets available include 1/10 on his marriage surviving while in the White House, with 5/1 on it not going the distance.

Or how about making odds on one of his children condemning a decision he makes while President, with Ivanka a 2/1 favourite to do just that. The decision taken by Paddy Power to jump on the North Korea bandwagon, especially given Trump's presidency and relations between the two nations, comes as no big surprise. The brand has recently created a book of bets based on the country's leader, Kim Jong-Un.

The 33-year-old is the 'Supreme Leader' of North Korea and has been in office since 28 December 2011. Paddy Power's markets are sure to court debate given their somewhat tongue-in-cheek take on a nation that's again making news for the wrong reasons – this time claiming to have a missile-ready nuclear bomb that it can create in sufficient quantity to make all Paddy Power shops obsolete.

Taking a Punt on Paddy Power's North Korea Specials

The Paddy Power website currently has 12 betting events open in the North Korea Specials market. In typical Paddy style, some of the bets appear to be legitimate and serious options for astute punters, while others are surely just for a laugh – or are they? The first market available covers where Kim Jong-Un will visit next, with odds ranging from 1/1 for Guam, to 4/1 for Washington DC and big odds of 33/1 for frosty visits to London and Moscow.

Given the leader's apparent need to develop diplomacy and avoid a global crisis, taking bets on the market is likely to be popular for gamblers with their eye on the political world. Another legitimate market is based around bets on what year he will cease to be Supreme Commander of North Korea. Paddy Power thankfully doesn't see the world ending just yet, since it has odds of 14/1 on him to not be leader by the end of 2017.

More good news is the bookmaker has odds of 4/7 on him retaining power until at least 2031! Any punters that do see the mighty one falling from power can get 1/10 on the cause being his death, 5/1 a coup and 8/1 his resignation. It's also not the most ridiculous idea that North Korea might make an official Olympic bid during the next 50 years, although backers may be waiting a long time for a payout at 10/1.

Paddy Power's Tongue-in-Cheek North Korea Bets

While some North Korea betting markets offered by Paddy Power may have an element of value, some have been seemingly made for publicity and a bit of light-hearted fun. Some of the markets and odds on offer include:

  • Regulated NBA game in North Korea in Next Decade - 33/1
  • North Korea to offer Trade Alliance to the UK Post-Brexit - 40/1
  • Kim Jong-Un Emigrate to America in His Lifetime - 50/1
  • Kim Jong-Un Erects a Statue of Donald Trump - 66/1
  • Kim Jong-Un Bids for a Premier League Club - 66/1
  • Kim Jong-Un Challenges Donald Trump to Round of Golf - 80/1
  • Kim Jong-Un Demands His Face is Added to Mount Rushmore - 100/1

Perhaps the most amusing of all the North Korea betting markets on offer is the 1/2 on Kim Jong-Un opening a Paddy Power store in North Korea. Perhaps Paddy has a direct line to Kim and knows something that the rest of the world doesn't. Or maybe it's solely the master of creating irreverent betting markets that punters just can't get enough of. Either way, check out Paddy Power's unique markets today!
