Paddy Power Review

Paddy Power is widely regarded as the best online bookmaker to originate from Ireland. But they are more than just an Irish bookmaker and now they host a huge range of punters located all over the world.

The brand started in 1988 on the back of a merger between three bookmakers to try and combat the increasing strength the powerhouses of the industry had back then. Little did they know that they would be where they sit today.

Paddy Power has always done things a little differently to the conventional methods that most bookies follow. This has mainly come in the form of a range of controversial marketing campaigns that have an uncanny knack of being able to cause a scene.

The company went through a multi-billion-pound merger with betting exchange giants, Betfair in 2016. This makes the Paddy Power Betfair brand one of the biggest in the industry.

They sponsor several different sports teams and events, with one the highest profile being that of the Huddersfield Town FC. In fact, the deal that was struck with them in 2019 was one that caused quite a stir in that they removed any advertising from their shirt in a bid to “get clubs their shirts back”.

It's going to take just a couple of minutes to register your account with Paddy Power. It's one of the easiest sign-up processes that we've come across, which is great.

You have a two-step process when registering. The first part includes information about you, such as name, DOB, address, phone number, email and username. You will need to make sure that all the information here is correct as you will need to verify this later in the process.

It's going to be possible to set your account limits here for things like the frequency in how often you can deposit and the amount you can deposit. For example, you can set this to £50 per week or whatever you feel best.

The final part of the process will require that you validate your account. You are going to need to do this to get access to the bookmaker whilst logged in and also to make your first deposit. Documents that you need to send will include passport, driver's license and utility bills. As long as each is in date and utility bills within 3 months old, then you can just photograph these on your smartphone and upload them to your account.

Payments and Banking Methods

You have a strong range of banking methods at Paddy Power to choose from. These include Bank Transfer, Neteller, PayPal, PaySafeCard, Skrill and the Paddy Power Cash Card PPlus.

Deposits start from just £5 for each of the payment methods. Withdrawals will take 2-5 days for most of the options, but we found that it was often quicker than this. Debit card withdrawals have taken just over 24 hours previously, but we assume that this is based as much on your bank as it is to do with Paddy Power.

The Cash Card PPlus is one way that you can get funds instantly as this is linked up to any Paddy Power high street shop as well. It's a huge benefit over bookmakers that are solely based online.

Desktop/Mobile Experience

The desktop site is a fairly new design for Paddy Power. They underwent a massive makeover not long after the merger with Betfair, although admittedly the two are not linked in any way when it comes to design.

Given that it's a fairly unique look, it might take a little getting used to but bear with it as it does work well. The menu down the side is a little confusing though as there is no break between sports and then promotions and betting markets.

That said, you can jump about quickly and easily, and the logistics of the site are easy to work around.

The betting app is the star of the show here though. It's smooth, stable and offers all the features that you can get from the desktop site. The menu section is much more organised than on the desktop site, which means that moving from sport to sport is a lot easier.

You can download the app from the App Store for iOS and Google Play Store for Android.

Sports and Markets Available at Paddy Power

There is no shortage of sports to choose from at Paddy Power and as you would expect from one of the best in the world, their coverage is impressive, to say the least. There's an undoubted bias towards horse racing and football. Other sports are well at home here too, including US Sports, Golf, Tennis and Cricket. Paddy Power are also well known for their wide range of Novelty markets.

Betting Odds with Paddy Power

Paddy Power has a decent pricing structure on board, but we have to admit that it's not one of the best. They struggle for consistency for the most part and we found that whilst they were usually there or thereabouts from the bets we tested, there were times they were way off.

They do run a lot of boosted markets and enhanced odds specials though, so this does balance it out somewhat.

Betting Features

The first thing to note in terms of features is the stats section. Paddy Power has teamed with Touch Line, who are relatively new to the industry. They are able to bring together a huge range of data from dozens of sports. The best thing about it is how it integrates within the bookmaker, offering up a series of quick links next to the markets that you are betting on.

We liked that the stats section offered a range of “averages” which then allow the punter to create a more informed platform for their bet. For example, in a football match it will highlight the average number of goals scored, goals conceded, time of the first goal, yellow cards, red cards, subs, victory margins and defeat margins.

Cash-out betting has been a part of Paddy Power for several years now and it's another standout feature. It's all linked into their betting slip and this allows you to see which games you can cash out from and the amount you will get in return. Whilst we've slightly criticised the odds earlier, interestingly the cash-out prices that we've seen have been highly lucrative, which is good to see as it's often a point that is overlooked.

The Fantasy sports section on Paddy Power is another unique feature that we enjoyed using. They include a range of sports, such as NFL, football, NBA and golf. All you do is make your picks and then you are paid out based on the points that your fantasy team has scored. Most markets last just a day or so, which means no need to wait all season long to get paid out.

Betting blogs are fairly common these days for the bigger bookies, but Paddy Power has one of the best. The first thing to note with it is that there is tons of info on offer and multiple articles are added daily. They also include articles from some of their professional sporting ambassadors, giving an insight into which bets are possibly offering better value than others.

The sites football and horse racing sections are both core areas and it's here where the site excels. In terms of horse racing, the section is linked to the Racing Post. As a result, you get a ton of information regarding that race, including an overview and then also tips from people all over the industry, such as The Times, Telegraph, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, RP Ratings, TopSpeed and PostData.

Current Promotions

We've spoken a couple of times already about how good Paddy Power are for promotions. They offer a stunning range and there is always something going on. What's best about it all is that they are open to existing players as well, something that often gets overlooked with many bookies.

Free Bet Club – Place 5 x £10 bets in a week and get a £10 free bet to use as you like.

2 Up – If your football team goes 2 goals up, then Paddy Power will pay out early as a win (selected games and markets).

£10 Power Up – Place a bet on the horses of £10 or more and claim a £10 Power Up reward placed in your account.

Customer Support

If there is one thing that Paddy Power does as well as anyone, it's knowing what their customers want. Their customer support is a reflection of this and the queries that we fired to them were answered promptly and thoroughly. Besides the usual phone, email and Live Chat, Paddy Power also have a very active Twitter support account.

Responsible Gambling Features

There is a whole mini site that has been created on Paddy Power that explains how they are approaching their work within the responsible gambling sector. The site already is part of Gamcare, and they have restricted the use of accounts until they are verified with them.

They include several features on-site as well, such as account history, account limits, betting limits, time out and even self-exclusion where needed. They also offer a self-assessment page where you can look over your account to see how much and how often you've bet, along with a betting calculator to kerb spending.

Our Verdict

Paddy Power has been towards the top of the pile for a lot of years now. There's a lot to like with the brand and even though they don't take themselves too seriously when it comes to marketing, the bookmaker is a section of the company that is no laughing matter.

It does have its flaws though and the lack of sports compared to some, along with erratic pricing means that it's not a bookie you could use all the time. That being said, they have so many features and their promotions are pretty much best in class, including the welcome offer. This is why we are happy to recommend Paddy Power as one of the best in the business.
