We’ve just passed the halfway point of the Big3 Tournament and the favorites are beginning to emerge. As always, in an eight-team league with plenty of roster turnover and unique rules, anything can and will happen. That’s why there hasn’t been one team that’s really stood out in the pack.
Before the tournament began we gave you our favorite frontrunners and also sprinkled in a few underdogs, based on incoming players we thought might have an impact. And wouldn’t you know it? Our favorite sleeper pick, the Nate Robinson-led Tri State, are now favorites in the tournament basketball betting fans have turned their attentions to with Summer League ending.
So as we did last month, we’ll give you our fop five favorite value bets as the playoff picture becomes clearer:
We loved what Robinson might be able to bring to the table, but it’s been another newcomer in David Hawkins leading the way. He’s averaged 19.0 points on 61 shooting and 7.2 rebounds in five games and is one of two players with three 4-pointers. Robinson’s been solid (10.2 points) and also has 11 assists to just one turnover in the tournament.
Amare Stoudemire and Jermaine O’Neal haven’t contributed much on offense but Tri State has allowed the fewest points through five games by a wide margin, helping them to a 4-1 record. Their only blemish was a two-point loss to the undefeated 3 Headed Monsters. Still, we like Tri State as a favorite in this tournament. Hawkins has been the biggest surprise in the league and Robinson still hasn’t had a huge game. It’s coming.

Remember Corey Maggette? The 38-year-old looks like he could still hang in the NBA the way he’s been playing in Big3. His 19.5 points and 8.2 rebounds are both third in the league, and he leads the league with 3.6 assists per game. A grey-haired Cuttino Mobley is shooting 47% from 3-point range and Chris “Birdman” Andersen is third in the league with 1.2 blocks pergame.
Their only loss so far came to Tri State (our pick to win it all), but as we saw in the inaugural season it pays to have the league’s best player (Rashard Lewis, 3 Headed Monsters). Right now that player is Maggette, and with a 4-1 record Power is well on their way to a playoff berth. If they can even get a little production out of Quentin Richardson or Glen “Big Baby” Davis they’d be unstoppable.

Balanced attacks can be useful in 3-on-3 formats. And 3’s Company is the only above .500 team with two players averaging 13.0 or more points per game. Baron Davis was built for this stage, and he’s averaged 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals (no one else has matched those numbers). Just behind him is wing Andre Emmett, averaging 13.0 points and 6.2 rebounds.
At 3-2 they’re in fourth place (four teams make the playoffs) and just a game up on Killer 3s, but Killer 3s have all above .500 teams remaining on its schedule. It’s a good bet that 3’s Company will come in as the No. 4 seed, and that balanced attack could turn heads once they get there.

They’re the only undefeated team and they’re the favorites for a reason. But last year’s league leading scorer and MVP Rashard Lewis suffered an injury that will force him to miss the rest of the season. They replaced him with Jamari Moon, who scored 24 points and hit a game-winning 4-pointer last week, but it may be tough to fill the void. Reggie Evans is doing his thing on the glass, averaging a league-best 9.6 rebounds, and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf is shooting 50 percent from deep to try and make up some of what was lost in Lewis’ injury. They could very well win it all, but losing Lewis is a massive blow.

Here’s your new wild card. Last year 4-4 was good enough to make the playoffs in the inaugural season of Big3. Trilogy is sitting at 1-4, meaning they’ve got no room for error the rest of the way. The good news is the reigning champions play 0-5 Ghost Ballers and 1-4 Ball Hogs the next two weeks. They’ll have to get past Tri State in Week 8 to have a chance but they’ve got an out to turn things around.
Rashad McCants and Al Harrington still look solid and the addition of Derrick Byars may have sparked something; Trilogy won in Week 3 and lost to Power by just three since Byars’ addition. Harrington leads the league in points and steals, and McCants is due to really break out after he helped Trilogy to a title. They’re long odds to be sure, and you’d be betting on five straight wins, but they’re still the defending champs. It could happen.
