Did Trends Win Last Year's Champion Bumper?

Only the first and second finishers made the Champion Bumper trends shortlist in 2020.

Second Appreciate It had done everything a Champion Bumper winner should, winning on galloping, left-handed tracks, placing on a right-handed galloping track, and never finishing out of the first three.

Last time out he had won a Grade 2 at Leopardstown, and he was the first string of Champion Bumper master Willie Mullins, seeking to win the race for the 10th time.

It was no surprise to see the five-year-old sent off the 15/8 favourite, but he proved no match for stablemate Ferny Hollow.

On trends, he was the second choice because it was a big concern that his last run was only 18 days ago. Every winner in the 10 years previously had lined up after a break of at least 32 days.

Despite this, he had won last time out at galloping track Fairyhouse, and had never finished out of the first two, he was also owned by 2019's winners Cheveley Park Stud.

Third Queens Brook was ahead of him in the Cheltenham betting, trainer Gordon Elliott then boasting a 33% strike rate in the Grade 1, but she had only run in one bumper, less than one month ago.

It was a 21-length win on an undulating course, and jockey Jamie Codd was again booked, having been on board for Elliott's two other Champion Bumper winners, but her rating of 118 put her well behind her rivals on paper.
