Did Trends Win The Last Cheltenham Foxhunter Chase?

Billaway, Shantou Flyer, and Minella Rocco scored best on trends, all ticking the top five above, as well as fulfilling all the key 10-Year trends. They went on to be second, third and fifth, the most crucial statistic being their fitness and class.

These three were among the only contenders who won a hunter chase last time out, almost every other runner contesting a point-to-point, including winner It Came To Pass, who by pulling up was immediately ruled out.

He was the first winner in more than 15 years to do so off the back of a point-to-point run since Cappa Bleu in 2009, and no horse since then had finished worse than seventh in their latest outing.

Mr Mercurial had also run in and won a hunter chase last time out, but was ruled out on account of his poor performances on the two occasions he had run in big hunter chases at Cheltenham or Aintree. It just did not have the class and finished 16th.

Billaway was the 11/4 favourite in the Cheltenham betting, and deserved to be after an eight-length win over Stalker Wallace in a Naas hunter chase last time out. Wins at Naas are a good pointer to Cheltenham ability.

Shantou Flyer had finished second the previous year, when also a great trends fit, and this time cantered around Fakenham to win a hunter chase in preparation. It was his fourth Festival appearance and third placing.

Minella Rocco was another Cheltenham fan, having won the National Hunt Chase and finished second in the Gold Cup. He had won both his hunter chase starts that season, and had top race jockey Derek O'Connor booked, making him a leading fancy.
