How Eglantine Du Seuil won 2019's Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Hurdle

For the first time Willie Mullins did not saddle the Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Hurdle favourite, but he won the race anyway, with 50/1 shot Eglantine Du Seuil.

Ridden by Noel Fehily, the five-year-old had run just twice over hurdles before, winning on debut at Sligo many months ago. She had not run since September, and was fourth at the last flight, but flew home to beat stablemate Concertista by a short head.

4.50 CHELTENHAM - 2019 Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Hurdle Result

  1. Eglantine Du Seuil 50/1
  2. Concertista 66/1
  3. Tintangle 40/1

Against the odds, she somehow continued her trainer's strange-hold on the four-year-old race, with Concertista achieving an even more impressive feat with second on her first run over hurdles, and her first run since summer 2017.

Fellow Irish trainer Gordon Elliott saddled third Tintangle and fourth Black Tears (25/1), with the Paul Webber-trained Indefatigable first of the British contingent to finish in fifth.

Mullins had run seven horses in the Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Hurdle, My Sister Sarah the shortest-priced at 13/2 back in 13th. The 15/8 favourite Epatante finished ninth for jockey Barry Geraghty and trainer Nicky Henderson
