If there’s been one major surprise from Wimbledon this year, it’s that it’s been full of surprises and bookmakers aren't expecting anything less in the Men's and Women's Finals. Punters looking to bet on the Wimbledon Finals in 2017 should definitely consider wagering on some surprise outcomes.
For the women, the unlikely rise of Britain’s Johanna Konta has dared those on Henman Hill and beyond to dream of the first British female win since Virginia Wade in 1977. While over in the men’s bracket, issues with court conditions and the injury woes of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have left Wimbledon legend Roger Federer with a rare chance to turn back the clock.
Indeed, as it currently stands, the Swiss star is riding high with many of the top tennis betting sites, including NetBet. With world number one Murray falling in the quarter-finals alongside Djokovic and Rafa Nodal a distant memory after exiting in the round of 16, it now looks as though it’s Federer’s title to lose!
However, as we’ve said, Wimbledon 2017 has been full of surprises and that could mean world number six, Marin Cilic, could blast his way to an unexpected victory. The heavy-hitting Croatian has been dominant throughout the tournament this year; only dropping sets to the always tricky Gilles Muller. In fact, had he not made such tough work of his quarter-final victory, Cilic’s 4/1 odds with NetBet might have been slightly lower.
Fortunately, as anyone with an ounce of knowledge about online betting knows, longer odds aren’t always a bad thing. Indeed, in this instance, we can say with confidence that Cilic is on top form. Only dropping sets when you’re a whisker away from a Wimbledon final is no mean feat and that certainly makes him a strong pick for anyone looking for a slice of value.
Unfortunately, what you also have to consider here is that Federer has matched Cilic all the way when it comes to perfect wins. Not only this, but he actually went one better and won his quarter-final match in straight sets against world number seven, Milos Raonic. So, if you’re someone that likes to look at previous results and make your predictions that way, Federer at 4/11 with NetBet isn’t a bad shout.
But, and this could be the clincher here, "Wimbledon 2017 has been full of surprises". We already know that the grass is suffering this year and that’s caused grip issues for some players. We also know that injuries have ripped through the top players like a virus and caused them to falter. We also know that Federer is 35-years-old and has a lot of miles on his body.
Piecing all these factors together, we could see an upset in the Wimbledon final. While that doesn’t necessarily mean Federer will falter at the final hurdle, it means there’s a chance he could. If there is an opening for someone else to step in, Cilic certainly looks like the most worthy candidate at the moment.
Conversely, if underdog Sam Querrey can pull off another shock win (as he did against Andy Murray), then we could see the birth of a new star on the world scene. At 20/1 with NetBet, he’s certainly the outsider in tennis betting terms. However, if we continue this trend of surprising results, then anything is possible and that makes 20/1 too strong of a price to not have a cheeky punt on.
Over in the women’s event, the aforementioned Konta has defied her seventh place world ranking and now sits as the second favourite with bet365 at 9/4 odds. Although Garbine Muguruza is currently the outright favourite at 6/4, the bookmakers clearly have a soft spot for Konta who fighting for wildcard entries to mid-level events just two years ago.
When it comes to women’s tennis betting, Cinderella stories shouldn’t really cloud your judgement. However, Konta hasn’t had a fairy tale ride throughout the tournament this year. After dropping the first set in her semi-final match against Simona Halep, it looked as though the British dream was over.
Things quickly changed in the second though and, by the close of the match, Konta had not only proved she can hang with the best in the world, but she has the grit and determination to win Wimbledon. Naturally, having the skills and actually putting them to good use isn’t always easy. However, Konta will clearly have the crowd on her side if she makes the final and that makes her great value at 9/4 odds.

When it comes to men’s tennis betting at Wimbledon, the finale is often a hard-fought affair. With this in mind, we could well see the championship take an age to complete. Indeed, with Wimbledon maintaining its aversion to tiebreak deciders, the eventual winner will have to win by two clear points if it’s all square by the fifth set.
Given that this could be the case, it might be wise to look for total set bets or winning margin wagers at Paddy Power. However, if you’re someone that likes to go against the grain, Paddy Power is offering to payout wins straight away if a player goes two sets up. This Wimbledon betting promo could actually work in your favour if there’s a fast starter in the mix.
For example, if Federer makes it to the final, he may push the pace early in an attempt to avoid a long drawn-out match. However, if fatigue then started to take hold of the 35-year-old’s legs, he could lose his lead and, potentially, the match. Were this to happen and you’d taken Paddy Power’s pre-match single betting offer, you could win with a bet on Federer, even if he goes on to lose.
Whichever way the results go this year, both the women's final on July 15 and the men's championship match on July 16 look set to be hugely entertaining affairs – take your chances on the winner at NetBet!
