The last time Man Utd met Spurs, they scraped a 1-0 win at Old Trafford. Their next encounter takes them out of their comfort zone to Wembley, where Tottenham are playing while their new stadium is constructed on the old White Hart Lane site. Both teams have won four of their last six games, drawing the other two.
Tottenham, however, have shown flair in their recent matches, rebounding from a pre-Christmas dip in form. They bested Southampton on Boxing Day in an action-packed 5-2 victory, where Man Utd were held to a 0-0 draw by The Saints a week later.
To be fair, Spurs last game away was also against Southampton, where they only managed a 1-1 draw. So with the two teams equally matched in many respects, who are the top football bookmakers marking as favourites to win? Read on to find out!
Despite being eight points clear of Spurs, it seems punters are still betting against Jose Mourinho. Online bookmaker SportNation has odds of Spurs winning at 6/5, while a draw and Man Utd winning share the same odds at 11/5. With rivals Man City 13 points clear and looking more like Premier League champions every day, perhaps United’s players have lost focus on the game.
That said, many had expected Spurs to best the Reds when they last met in October, but they managed to claim a late goal in the 81st minute thanks to substitute Anthony Martial. When placed in a greater context, Spurs have only won five of the last 26 games at Old Trafford.
With the next game being at their temporary home in Wembley, perhaps it's all the motivation they need to claw a few points back and rise up the ranks of the league. Two players promise to be a thrilling watch. The first is Harry Kane, who missed the last Man Utd match due to injury. His confidence and form have been exemplary since his return and Spurs will be hoping he can knock a couple past David de Gea.
To counter him, former Gunners striker Alexis Sanchez is expected to make his premier league debut for Man Utd against Spurs after completing a four-and-a-half year deal worth £14 million. The switch has been the hot topic of the press for weeks and fans will be eager to see how Mourinho slots him into the team.
With stars Harry Kane and Alexis Sanchez both set to play in this match, it would be disappointing if both forwards couldn't find the back of the net at some point. Ladbrokes has very tight odds between the two options, with 'No' currently sitting at 10/11 and the 'Yes' bet ever so slightly higher with odds of 20/23.
As with the question of who'll win the match, Ladbrokes thinks that if there are to be goals, Spurs will be first on the score sheet, offering odds of 10/13. Man Utd are a little behind them, resting at odds of 6/5. It's interesting that the odds of no goals scored is 8/1. If you think these two premier league clubs can hold each other in a stalemate like they did up until the 81st minute in October, then these are seriously compelling odds.
For the same bet, with both teams being held in a 0-0 draw, Ladbrokes is offering 17/2 under the Exact Score section, which is just slightly better than the 8/1 for no first goal. Combining them could see those odds increase dramatically. For those who want to see some drama on the pitch, a score line bet with some goals is worth a punt.
If Tottenham were to hold Man Utd at bay with a 1-0 lead, you can clinch a win at 27/4. For the same scenario but with Man Utd leading by the final whistle, the odds are higher at 17/2. Spurs bagging two goals but keeping a clean sheet puts the bet at 10/1, while with Man Utd it goes up to a less likely 15/1.
However, a 1-1 draw has solid odds of 6/1, which could be worth a look. So if you think you can tell which team is going to bag the most goals, why not place a bet with Ladbrokes now?
