Galway Races 2019 Tips, Odds and Analysis

Quick Tips:

There's something about Galway that racing people simply can't get enough of.

Naturally, racing fans are perpetually in love with the likes of Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown - but the Galway Races are so accessible to everybody that it's hard to resist.

Of course, like horse racing generally nowadays, it's a festival that is dominated by the bigger yards and owners overall, but with 7 days of racing there is plenty of opportunities for so-called "smaller connections" to strike at a big festival. Nowadays the bigger meetings simply don't offer this and every year there's many a heart-warming result for the "little guys" of the sport we love.

Socially it's an event everyone should attend at least once in their lifetime. Galway is a cacophony of top class racing, fervent horse racing betting heats and tremendous fun all wrapped up in one.

Galway Races Tips

Barra (Galway Plate)

Barra, a 20/1 shot with Bet365, is a horse I believe is massively overpriced here.

Last time she was finally putting it all together over fences in the Midlands National at Kilbeggan when falling with the race firmly in control. She was going to win easy that day, but because of her fall she only went up 4 pounds to a mark of 137. However, had she stayed on her feet to win that day, she would have ended up with a much higher rating than 137, so in my mind she's somewhat well in here.

Obviously it's far from ideal to come into a race like this off the back of such a fall, but she definitely has the ability to strike off 137, especially when you consider she was 3rd off this very mark over hurdles in a Coral Cup at the Cheltenham festival.

With some higher rated horses set to run here, Barra will run off an attractively low weight and can win another Galway Plate for the relentless Gordon Elliott.

Gardens Of Babylon (Galway Hurdle)

Another year, and another unbelievably tricky Galway Hurdle to take apart with a plethora of obvious chances in the betting!

Band Of Outlaws is naturally going to be very popular after landing a monster gamble at the Cheltenham Festival in the Fred Winter. He runs here off a mark of 145 and that is by no means beyond him, but I'm just not convinced he is a better horse than Joseph O'Brien's other challenger in Gardens Of Babylon.

I don't at all believe that the Fred Winter Band Of Outlaws won was anything special and he's rated three pounds higher than Gardens Of Babylon who has been placed in Grade One affairs such as the Spring Juvenile Hurdle when 2nd and in the Triumph Hurdle when third behind the brilliant Pentland Hills. He got his act together to grab a deserved win at the Punchestown festival over this trip, and he may just have the class edge here in handicap company.

Band Of Outlaws is a 6/1 shot with the Best Horse Racing Sites, whilst Garden's Of Babylon is a 10/1 shot with BetHard - I know which one I'd prefer to be on!

One bet that I will also cover is the each way double on Barra and Gardens Of Babylon which pays 272/1 with Bet365 – a man has to dream!

Others To Note

Exchange Rate is one who I potentially see winning more than once next week. He was an expensive failure at last year's festival, when first unseating early when going off a well backed evens favourite and then being beaten into third by Calie Du Mesnil. That winner has franked the form this season and Exchange Rate was badly hampered in that race also, so I'm willing to forgive him.

I'd imagine he may potentially be targeted at a hurdle race off his mark of 135, and he's a tempting 16/1 shot with Unibet for the Galway Hurdle were they to go this route. He will also have plenty of flat options including the big Amateur Derby on the first day of the festival. Exchange Rate has been fifth in the Irish Cesarewitch and second in the Irish November Handicap so there is plenty of scope off his mark of 90.

It's no surprise to see him targeted at this meeting as he is owned by The Mee family, who adore the Galway Races. They always target their horses here and may have a good week with Zero Ten set to run over fences during the week and he should take the world of beating wherever he turns up.

Other horses I'll be keeping an eye out for will be Premier League, who is only rated 2 pounds higher than the mark he won off at last year's festival, Onlyhuman in the Mile Premier Handicap who is going from strength to strength since joining Jessica Harrington and Serefeli, who is 8 pounds lower than when a decent 4th last year.

Also, one for those of you who like a big priced runner I'd recommend a small each way bet on California Lad were he to turn up for county Mayo trainer Fergal Birrane in any race at the meeting. He was a brilliant 6th last year after losing his place badly turning in and is now 4 pounds lower. Mayo people have a natural rivalry with Galway, so it wouldn't be any surprise were California Lad primed to plunder some prize money at the Galway Races.
