How NFL Trade Deadline Deals Impacted Super Bowl Odds 2019

The 2018 NFL Trade Deadline has passed and a number of teams were active before the cutoff. The top NFL bookmakers undoubtedly took notice, so let’s take a closer look at the trades that went down and how they impacted the Super Bowl betting odds and what it means to NFL betting fans.

Top NFL Trade Deadline 2018 Deals

  • Rams acquire Dante Fowler from Jaguars
  • Eagles acquire Golden Tate from Lions
  • Texans acquire Demaryius Thomas from Broncos
  • Redskins acquire Ha-Ha Clinton Dix from Packers
  • Ravens acquire Ty Montgomery from Packers
  • Cowboys acquire Amari Cooper from Raiders

Super Bowl 2018 Betting Odds

Los Angeles Rams

Pre-Trade Deadline: +300

Current: +275 with 888Sport.

The Rams acquired Dante Fowler Jr., who was sparingly used in Jacksonville. He was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft but he’s made just one career start. However, the Jags defensive line is deep, so take that into account.

Wade Phillips is a defensive guru. He’ll figure out a way to get Fowler on the field and (very likely) make him effective. Pass rush is one of the Rams few weaknesses on the team, so this is a good get for them.

In terms of the betting lines, they shifted slightly to +275. They were already a Super Bowl favorite, so there wasn’t much room for them to improve.

Philadelphia Eagles

Pre-Trade Deadline: +2500

Current: +2200 with 888Sport.

The Eagles picked up Tate, which is significant, but it doesn’t address some of their other issues. Tate has primarily played in the slot, where Nelson Agholor and Jordan Matthews also play. Tate is a significant upgrade over both of them, though. Agholor has been struggling this season.

The Eagles are 20th in rushing and have allowed the fifth-most sacks this season. They’ve allowed 26 sacks already after giving up just 36 all of last year. And they were third in rushing last season. Tate is an upgrade but it doesn’t fix their other problems, which is why they only got a slight bump.

Green Bay Packers

Pre-Trade Deadline: +2500

Current: +3300 with Karamba.

The Packers have had a rough week. They fumbled away a shot at a win on Sunday at Los Angeles and then downsized at the trade deadline. While trading Ty Montgomery – who had the costly fumble on Sunday and had fallen out of favor in the Packers backfield – made sense, trading Ha-Ha Clinton Dix didn’t.

Dix was rated as one of the two best safeties in the NFL this season by Pro Football Focus, so it’s hard to convince fans that this is a win-now move for the Packers. Their defense got worse here.

The Packers are 3-3-1 and visit New England this week. Don’t be surprised if their odds tumble even lower.

Houston Texans

Pre-Trade Deadline: +2200

Current: +2500 with Karamba.

The Texans lost Will Fuller to a torn ACL but did well to replace him with Demaryius Thomas.

Thomas is definitely not the Pro Bowl talent he once was, but he’s still a solid veteran who should be reinvigorated to play for a winning team. He’s still a good route-runner but this isn’t really a game-changer for this team. They’re just doing their best to get back to the level they were at before the Fuller injury.

As a whole, though, the Texans have won five straight but many of those contests have been by razor-thin margins. It’s clear that the sportsbooks – and many bettors – just don’t have a lot of faith in this squad.

Washington Redskins

Pre-Trade Deadline: +3300

Current: +3300 with 888Sport.

The Redskins picked up Dix to bolster what is already one of the league’s better units. They’re ranked second overall and fifth in points, which is quite impressive. Now they’ve added Dix, who is rated as one of the top two safeties in the league. The other is D.J. Swearinger, who Dix will line up beside each and every week.

It’s an underrated move for the Redskins, but overall, few people seem to have faith in this team. However, more people should take note of their defense and their remaining schedule as they still get Atlanta (this week), Tampa Bay (next week), three matchups against the lousy AFC South, the Giants, the Cowboys a couple of times and the Eagles.

Although their offense isn’t that impressive, the defense and schedule should be able to earn them a playoff berth.

Baltimore Ravens

Pre-Trade Deadline: +2500

Current: +3300 with 888Sport.

The Ravens’ odds continued to slip after losing for the third time in four weeks. They acquired Montgomery, who should help either as a receiver/runner out of the back field or as a slot weapon. Montgomery isn’t going to change the trajectory of this team, though, so that’s why we don’t see much of a shift.

Dallas Cowboys

Pre-Trade Deadline: +5000

Current: +5000 with 888Sport.

The Cowboys made a couple of moves on their bye week as they acquired Amari Cooper and fired their offensive line coach.

Cooper should give the receiving corps a boost but keep in mind that this was one of the worst units in the league, so even adding Cooper – a player who has vastly underachieved the last two seasons – should help. However, they gave up a first-round pick, which looks fairly steep.

As for firing the offensive line coach, the Cowboys front five has underachieved due to injuries more than anything else. It’s unclear if a coaching change makes anything better. Overall, this is still a fairly flawed team, which is why we didn’t see them get a boost after acquiring Cooper.
