La Liga Season Preview, Tips & Analysis

Quick Tips:

In the blink of an eye, summer has become but a distant memory, and the La Liga season is upon us once more. Judging by the fun and games in the transfer window and pre-season, there will be, as always, much to look forward to.

Not least seeing how the three promoted sides, Granada, Mallorca and Osasuna get on. The trio are all recent La Liga members but have been unable to sustain their positions in the Spanish top flight for any length of time. Maybe 2019/20 is the season where one, or all, are able to do that.

Barcelona Remain The Team To Beat

With Antoine Greizmann and Frenkie De Jong slotting into the set-up with ease, the Blaugrana will take some stopping domestically. Ousmane Dembele is fit again and with a point to prove, and Lionel Messi will want to add another trophy to his vast haul. It's easy to see why they are the favourites with the best football betting sites.

The relative calm at the Camp Nou is in stark contrast to what’s happening over at the Santiago Bernabeu. A horrific pre-season on the pitch, which included a humiliating 7-3 defeat to local rivals Atletico, has brought matters off the pitch into sharper focus. Zinedine Zidane gave a brutal assessment of Gareth Bale’s future in the Spanish capital, only for president, Florentino Perez, to scupper the Welshman’s move to China - where he would’ve become the first £1m per week player - at the 11th hour.

None of Los Blancos’ stars have got going as yet and, dare we say it, are already coasting through matches, not fearful of having their places taken. The Frenchman is certainly on rough ground at present and will need to hit the ground running if he doesn’t want to become another notch on Perez’s ‘hire em, fire em’ scale.

Valencia have had off field problems too, which has impacted their ability to conclude transfers. After such a decent 2018/19 in the end, it’ll be a great shame if Los Che have taken a step forward only to have to take another two back.

Losing so many starters from their side was always going to affect Atletico Madrid, some would say cripple them. However, it’s to their absolute credit that all of those who have left have been replaced by rock-solid reinforcements. Typical of Diego Simeone, he’s targeted those who are hungry to prove they’ve what it takes at the highest level, and the way in which they demolished Real in their pre-season friendly has got everyone sitting up and taking notice.

Real Betis will again be one to watch, along with local rivals, Sevilla. Both have new coaches in Rubi (Betis) and Julen Lopetegui (Sevilla), and they’ll be hoping to find the consistency that both teams were lacking last season. In the latter’s case, he has nine to signings to integrate but, importantly, after somewhere in the region of 13 to 14 managers in the last 16 years, Sevilla finally seem to understand that they’ve got to give the managerial incumbent the requisite time to affect things.

Rubi has added the exciting former Lyon man, Nabil Fekir, to Betis’ squad, and his main issue will be to tighten up a leaky defence. Do that and the verdiblancos should improve on their finish in 2018/19. Of the remaining teams, it will be interesting to see how Getafe fare with European football an added extra for them this time round. Jose Bordalas’ side were excellent last season, but the demands of the Europa League could undo their good work domestically.

Antoine Greizmann To Shine At Camp Nou

Although Lionel Messi is odds-on to take the ‘Pichichi’ top scorer crown again, there are a few contenders for the throne, one of whom is his new team-mate, Antoine Griezmann.

The French World Cup winner has already shown some superior movement in pre-season, opening up the attacking channels with ease, and though he didn’t find the net himself, the positions he was taking up ensured that he was rarely tracked and often got a shot on target.

Opposition teams will already have their hands full with Messi, Suarez and Dembele, and it affords Griezmann the luxury of being able to sit and hold until the very last moment. An abundance of chances will follow as a consequence.

He’s certainly not shot shy either and has a decent eye for goal, so odds at 7/1 with William Hill represent good football betting value.

Real Valladolid Set For A Long Season

Ronaldo Nazario’s first foray into club ownership hasn’t been the rip-roaring success that many predicted, and La Pucela were hanging on by their fingernails in the relegation dogfight last season.

Only four points separated them from the drop, and right up until the last couple of weeks of the season there was a real chance that Valladolid would fall back into the Segunda Division.

Record signing, Pablo Hervias, has been brought in from Eibar, with Sandro and Javi Sanchez being loaned from Everton and Real Madrid respectively. Jorge de Frutos also joins on loan from Los Blancos.

The problem for Valladolid is that none of their new faces are of a sufficient enough standard to improve them to the extent they require, and it begs the question as to why their multi-millionaire Brazilian owner hasn’t dug a little deeper into his pockets.

They’ll be up against it from the first whistle of the first game. 888Sport's 6/4 odds on Valladolid to be relegated are worth a second look.

Sevilla To Soar To The Top Four

There’s no doubt that with the right coach in situ, Sevilla are a force to be reckoned with. Only Unai Emery in the recent past has been given anything like the longevity needed to make a success of the role, and multiple Europa League titles would attest to the fact that he was the best man for the job.

Far too may have come and gone in quick succession, but Julen Lopetegui has the ability and skill set to emulate his contemporary. Monchi, the sporting director, has ‘hung his hat on’ the former Real Madrid man, so to speak, and with nine new signings, there’s a real hunger back at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.

After a terrible few months at the Santiago Bernabeu, Lopetegui has a point to prove himself, and we’ve already seen in pre-season that he has his staff dancing to his tune.

Wins over Reading, FC Dallas and last season’s Champions League winners, Liverpool, have got everyone buzzing again. A fourth placed finish certainly isn’t beyond the Andalusians, and BetHard will offer you odds of 2/1 for just such an outcome.
