Lomachenko vs Crolla Betting Odds, Tips & Best Bets to Back

Quick Tips

Unified lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko takes on mandatory challenger Anthony Crolla on Friday, April 12, in something just above a stay-busy fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Lomachenko (12-1, 9 KOs), one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, is a huge 1/100 favorite to continue his winnings way over former titleholder Corolla (34-6-3, 13 KOs), a 16/1 underdog. But that doesn’t mean boxing betting fans can’t find some value bets.

Lomachenko-Crolla Betting Tips

It’s not quite the 135-pound battle fans had envisioned when Lomachenko, who was already the WBA lightweight titleholder, snagged the WBO belt with a 12-round unanimous decision win over Jose Pedraza.

After all, newly crowned IBF champion Richard Commey, who picked up his strap by stopping Isa Chaniev in February, looked the part of at least a semi-serious test for Lomachenko and had the added luxury of being represented by the same promoter.

But Commey suffered a hand injury, so in stepped former titleholder Crolla, who might not be considered in the same league as Lomachenko but has at least done what he needed to do to snag the chance to prove otherwise.

Make no mistake. Crolla is a world-class fighter. He’s ranked No. 4 by The Ring magazine at 135 pounds, and has proved himself capable against top-level opposition. That the 32-year-old from Manchester, England, is such a huge underdog is less about his lack of ability or credentials and more about the special embodiment of excellence that is Lomachenko.

That being said, Lomachenko is all kinds of wrong for Crolla. The 31-year-old Ukrainian possess better boxing skills, more overall power and faster hands and feet. Crolla’s only real chance in the fight is to walk Lomachenko down and wear him out over time, but that kind of approach has already been tried by better fighters than Crolla and has unequivocally failed.

Best Bets for Lomachenko-Crolla

With an implied win probability of 99 percent, backing Lomachenko over Crolla at 1/100 won’t return very much in terms of winnings. But it’s hard to envision the fight going any other way than Lomachenko’s unless there’s some kind of freak injury, so that’s the only number on that market to play.

Crolla is tough and aggressive. His toughness should serve him well, but the aggressive way he fights will probably be a liability against Lomachenko in that he’ll press for offense when he probably shouldn’t.

And while Crolla will have a slight advantage in reach, he probably won’t be able to use it because Lomachenko’s footwork is so much better than just about any other fighter in boxing.

Moreover, Lomachenko is an absurdly crafty southpaw who really understands how to use angles to enter and exit the fray. Because of that, the fight will mostly be Lomachenko darting in and out of harm’s way while piling up huge punch stats.

The most likely outcome for Lomachenko-Crolla is a mid- to late-round stoppage for Lomachenko. Crolla is a solid professional, but Lomachenko will figure him out fairly early in the fight and pour on the offense as the rounds go by.

Backing Lomachenko by KO, TKO or DQ at 1/5 with 888Sport. is probably the best bet on the board. While Crolla has only been stopped once, he’s been put to the canvas by lesser fighters and has suffered cuts to less accurate punchers than Lomachenko, too.

If betting the Rounds Market, Lomachenko in Rounds 7-9 at 5/2 probably makes the most sense of any other group. And you can go to Karamba to bet those odds.

Fighters usually slow down after about four rounds, so Lomachenko can really start putting his combinations together around then and let the accumulation of his sharper, more accurate punches do the rest.

Besides Crolla is tough as nails so even if Lomachenko gets to his chin early, he probably will have to work Crolla over good before securing the stoppage win.
