Newbury Betting Tips: Best Bets On Day Of Cheltenham Clues

Quick Tips

Nearly every winner on Newbury's Betfair Hurdle card last year went on to run at the Cheltenham Festival, making this Saturday's event a fixture not to be missed.

We've got a Cheltenham Gold Cup trial in the Grade 2 Denman Chase, a Champion Chase prep in the Game Spirit Chase, and a host of talented young hurdlers in the Betfair Hurdle itself - an insanely tough betting heat on a day of Cheltenham trials at Newbury.

Reiterating this meeting's worth for those looking for Cheltenham betting clues; 11/14 winners from this card in 2017 and 2018 went on to run at the next Cheltenham Festival.

That includes the winners of every feature in the past two seasons - the Betfair Hurdle, Denman and Game Spirit Chases - and the last two winners of the 3m handicap hurdle (3.05), last year's Listed bumper winner (4.45), and the previous year's novice hurdle scorer (1.15).

Back To Hurdles For Tommy Rapper

>> Back Tommy Rapper for 1.50 at Newbury at 16/1 with William Hill

It’s very difficult to envisage many runners from the 3m handicap hurdle featuring in the Cheltenham betting, but last year the winner went to the Pertemps Final, the second to the Coral Cup and the fifth to the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle.

Perhaps one or two may go to the Martin Pipe this year too; regardless, the race is another excellent Newbury betting opportunity, Samburu Shujaa shading favouritism at odds of 9/2 with Unibet.

Our tip is the 138-rated Tommy Rapper, who actually ran in last season’s Martin Pipe at Cheltenham, finishing ninth. He looks well over-priced here at 16/1 with William Hill, who are paying out down to fourth place on ante-post lists.

After a couple of spins this term over fences, it appears trainer Dan Skelton is going back down the tried-and-trusted hurdling route with Tommy Rapper. He won at Haydock this time last year and can make his presence felt again in this field.

Cautiously Tipping Coneygree

>> Back Coneygree for Denman Chase at 14/1 with Ladbrokes

This year’s Denman Chase entries include two former Gold Cup winners, but is the most recent of those winners really such a shoo-in as the betting suggests?

To the casual reader Native River’s form looks attractive - second in the Betfair Chase at Haydock and third in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day - but that latter race really concerns me, as it was quite a thumping the nine-year-old received from.

The new king on the block in this division may well be that winner, Clan Des Obeaux, who progressed nicely from his Betfair Chase opener. At the age of seven, he has plenty more competitive years, but on for Newbury this Saturday I am going to tip the veteran enigma, better known as Coneygree.

>> Cheltenham Gold Cup 10-year Trends

Dogged by niggles and injuries throughout his career, the 2015 Gold Cup winner ran a superb comeback race in the BetVictor Handicap Chase at Cheltenham.

He was disappointingly well-beaten in the King George (before unseating his rider), but if he can bounce back after a 45-day break, then he must be in with a decent each-way shout at 14/1 with Ladbrokes.

Cast your minds back to 2015 and Coneygree won a six-runner version of the Denman Chase before going on to make Cheltenham history. Stranger things have happened on a racecourse!

Fox Norton Tipped As Banker

>> Back Fox Norton for Game Spirit Chase at 8/11 with Paddy Power

If you’re looking for a Newbury betting banker on the card on Saturday, look no further than the Colin Tizzard-trained Fox Norton. Already a four-time winner at Cheltenham, the nine-year-old is currently priced up at 8/11 with Paddy Power for the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase at 3.00pm.

>> Cheltenham Champion Chase 10-year Trends

With that 2m chase looking increasingly likely to cut up due to some of the entries taking up other options, this multiple Grade 1 winner may have very few rivals to tackle. Take the 8/11 now and thank me later.

Festival Handicaps On Agenda For Lisp

>> Bet On Lisp for Betfair Hurdle at 14/1 with Ladbrokes

The richest and most competitive race at Newbury is the £155,000 Betfair Hurdle and this 2m handicap hurdle can head to Barbury Castle in Wiltshire courtesy of the Alan King-trained Lisp.

Lisp ran a superb race last time out when finishing second to last year's County Hurdle winner Mohaayed, the form of which has worked out reasonably well since.

>> County Hurdle 10-year Trends

King holds this five-year-old in high regard and he looks the type who could easily represent him in either the Coral Cup or the County Hurdle at the Cheltenam Festival (25/1 for both races at Bet365).

His odds of 14/1 with Ladbrokes on Saturday are not to be sniffed at and Lisp is certainly a serious each-way contender in the Betfair Hurdle betting.
