The main storyline for the Giants coming into Sunday’s matchup against Washington has nothing to do with any of their players. It’s who they will be lining up against, specifically on defense.
Mark Sanchez wasn’t even on the Redskins two weeks ago but will be starting Sunday. The first time these two teams met Washington got the better of the matchup – 20-13 – and limiting Saquon Barkley to just 38 yards on 13 carries.
While the start of the season was brutal for the Giants, the past few weeks have seen a better-looking Eli Manning, which should give more than just hope to NY heading into this game. Here's what NFL betting fans should consider backing:
Manning has thrown seven TDs to just two INTs the past few weeks a much improved QB from the first two months. The biggest issue the Giants have is keeping Barkley in games despite having to rely on the passing attack. He was stellar last week in a 30-27 beating of the Bears. Barkely exploded for 125 yards.
This is a perfect opportunity for the Giants who can take advantage of Sanchez and a Resdkins D that has been getting worse defending the run. Washington’s top, CB Josh Norman, is also questionable.
Washington is down to a third string QB and a defense that has been getting pushed around on the ground. Despite a close loss to Philadelphia last week – 28-13 – it was a horrible fourth quarter where they blew the lead.
While revenge is on the mind of the Giants players, it’s more about salvaging a season for the Redskins. Washington is still not out of the playoff hunt and can keep pace with Dallas and Philadelphia with a win.
Here’s the problem: Washington’s QB isn’t able to make enough plays to outduel Manning. If anything, it’s been neglect of Barkley at times that has undone this Giants team.
This is not a situation of a backup QB taking a week’s worth of first team reps. This is Sanchez coming off the street trying to beat a Giants team that’s clicking. NY has won three of four games and has gone over 21 points in four straight.
Washington would struggle with Colt McCoy to keep up with the Giants offense; good luck doing that with Sanchez. Bet the Giants -3.5 with Karamba.
There isn’t any advantage they have now with a week’s worth of practice that can overcome the lack of talent in Sanchez. Adrian Peterson became the second player since 1950 to have a 90+ yard run and still finish under 100 yards rushing. Peterson (shoulder) practiced this week but was limited at times but is expected to be active.
On Washington’s offensive line, G Johnathan Cooper (torn bicep) and G Tony Bergstrom (high ankle sprain) were hurt in Monday’s game against Philadelphia and are both out.
The Redskins only hope in hitting this over would be to pound Peterson into retirement. The Giants are far from lights out on defense and have been consistently allowing 26.3 points per game.
The Giants should be able to put an immense amount of pressure on Sanchez since he’s down 4 of the Redskins’ original starting offensive linemen. There isn’t a simple or even complex way to break down how Washington to can move the football let alone score points. Bet the under at -121 with 888Sport.
We keep going back to the hurdle that Washington will be unable to clear, no matter how well their defense may play. Overcoming a third string QB vs a player in Manning who has hit a stride.
Sanchez and the Redskins won’t be able to come out firing, and the Giants have shown solid first-half game plans. Washington would need to play a ball control slow tempo offense, keeping the ball out of Sanchez.
There is little to no protection of the QB with Washington’s front line combined with the Giants ability to quick strike with Barkley and Odell Beckham Jr. Bet on the Giants to come out firing and win the first half at -148 with 888Sport.
