The misery for the Oakland Raiders gets worse each week. It’s amazing, but this team and this season becomes a bigger mess with each passing week.
After losing in Week 10, 20-6 to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Raiders fell to 1-9. They are the only one-win team in the NFL and are in the driver’s seat for the No. 1 overall pick.
At the moment, Oakland looks like it could lose out. The Raiders have lost five straight games. All of those games have been by 14 or more points. Oakland has six games by 14 or more this season. The most in team history is seven in a single season. In his first stint with Oakland, Jon Gruden lost four games by 14 or more points in his four years combined with Oakland.
Oakland has been outscored by a total of 75-9 in the past nine quarters, dating back to the fourth quarter of a loss to the Colts in Week 8. Oakland has been held without a touchdown in three of the past four games.
Gruden and Oakland quarterback Derek Carr have not meshed yet. Carr isn’t getting much help, either. He has been sacked 28 times in nine games. The most he has been sacked in his five-season NFL career is 31. That record is in trouble.
Gruden has been calling some very strange plays and that has been playing into the fact that the Raiders aren’t scoring much. Oakland’s defense has been a mess as well. Opponents are averaging 6.71 yards per play. That so the highest amount in NFL history through nine games since the 1970 merger.
The Raiders issues are wearing on players. Some showed the stress of losing both on the field and in the locker room in Week 10.
The Cardinals aren’t in much better shape than the Raiders. This should be one of the truly dreadful matchups of the season. Arizona is 2-7 with its only wins over 2-8 San Francisco. The Cardinals have a minus-101-point differential. Oakland is a league low minus-125.
Arizona has some nice young pieces in quarterback Josh Rosen and receiver Christian Kirk. But this team doesn’t appear to be well coached and there’s not a lot of talent on the roster.
Oakland receiver Martavis Bryant is going to be out, for at least a few weeks with a sprained PCL. Also, receiver Jordy Nelson may miss time with a knee injury.
The Raiders went to training camp with Amari Cooper, Nelson and Bryant as their top receivers. Now, their top rotation might be Brandon LaFell, Seth Roberts and Marcell Ateman. LaFell joined the team in September, Roberts is an afterthought and Ateman has never played an NFL snap.
Several Arizona players including safety Budda Baker (knee), guard Mike Iupati (knee) and defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche (calf) missed Wednesday’s practice.
Here are some things for NFL betting fans to consider in this matchup:
This is truly a matchup of two terrible teams. The Raiders are probably the NFL’s worst team, while the Cardinals are definitely one of the worst five teams in the NFL. The Cardinals, though, have some hope, while the Raiders are a tattered group.
The Cardinals have beat the 49ers twice, so that means they can play well against bad teams. The Raiders were beat by 31 points at the hands of the 49ers two weeks ago. Bet Cardinals giving the four points with 888Sport. Remember, Oakland has lost five games in a row by 14 or more points.
Neither team can score very well. The Cardinals are averaging 13.9 points a game while the Raiders are scoring at a rate of 16 a game and have not scored a touchdown in three of their past four games. However, neither team can play defense, either.
Oakland is allowing 30 points a game, while the Cardinals are surrendering 25 points a game. When bad teams play, weird things happen. I think that 40.5 over/under line might be a tad too low. Bet Raiders-Cardinals over 40.5 with Karamba.
Oakland has been a decent first-half team for much of this season. It usually falls apart in the second half. Because this may be a sloppy game and the Cardinals are not markedly better. I’d bet the Raiders as first-half winner at +145 with 888Sport before they swoon in the second half.
