The Open Championship 2019 Betting Preview, Odds and Tips

Quick Tips:

Golf’s oldest major, the Open Championship, takes centre stage again, with the Dunluce Links course at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, hosting the showpiece event for the first time in 68 years.

In its recent history, the course has undergone a few changes, even though many who played there believed it to already be the best course in Ireland. Two new holes, the 7th and 8th, have impressed everyone and helped take its stock even higher amongst golfing aficionados.

The favourite in the Golf betting, Rory McIlroy, set a course record of 61 back in 2005 and at the time told reporters how he hoped that Portrush would once again host the open. Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke, both club members, have often said much the same, and though it’s taken longer than anyone expected, it would appear to be have been worth the wait.

An extensive playing line-up was only to be expected, and so it’s no surprise to see the great and the good of the sport all involved.

Rory the man to beat?

Home advantage always adds something to a player’s game, and though Rory McIlroy might feel the weight of expectation, he can also thrive on the adrenaline.

Two tour wins this year already, along with four other top five finishes, hints at a man in form at just the right time, and a familiarity with the course also plays in his favour. He’s hitting the ball as well as he ever has, and has looked focused and confident in his recent tournaments.

Brooks Koepka, a four-time winner in the last 10 majors is one of many that don’t intend to let McIlroy have things all his own way, but if the Ulsterman gets into the groove on the opening 18 holes, he won’t look back.

The tournament favourite with all of the best betting sites, he remains at a generous 9/1 with Grosvenor at the time of writing.

Time for Rose to blossom

It’s something of a surprise that Justin Rose still only has one major to his name – the 2013 US Open at Merion.

A regular winner on the PGA Tour, an Olympic gold medallist and former world No.1, the Englishman nevertheless was unable to fulfil what many felt was his destiny on a regular enough basis.

Having finished a more than creditable third at this year’s US Open, Rose is ready to throw down the gauntlet to his contemporaries once more.

He does so without having played since that tournament, something that many think will hamper him in the latter stages here.

Whilst he readily accepts that point of view, Rose has been steadfast in his own belief that coming into the tournament fresh, both mentally and physically, will help rather than hinder his natural game.

You can still get him at 20/1 with Bet Regal and without the pressure that will follow McIlroy around the course, Rose is in decent enough fettle to ensure he’s in the shake up on the final day, when it will all come down to the smallest details.

Molinari the value bet

Defending champion, Francesco Molinari, is in confident mood ahead of his opening round on Thursday.

Since his victory at Carnoustie last year, the Italian’s life has changed immeasurably, both on and off the course, and it’s something that he’s had to get used to given that he generally prefers the quiet life.

No chance of that this weekend. Even the local ice cream parlour, run by an Italian family, have a giant mural of him on their outside wall!

Expectation can be a cruel mistress, and never was that better evidenced that in April’s Masters event when Molinari led the field with seven holes to play but then faded badly to end up tied in fifth place.

Having worked with performance coach, Dave Allred, the Italian believes he now has the tools to cope with the pressure, when it comes, and give himself every chance of another major victory.

Part of Europe’s Ryder Cup winning side, Molinari will approach the Open in much the same way as he did in that tournament, taking things hole by hole, not looking too far ahead, and feeding off of the energy of the crowd.

He’ll need to be resilient throughout on a course that will sort the men out from the boys very quickly, and we’ll know after the first few holes whether there’s substance behind Molinari’s rhetoric.

The Italian’s odds range from between 20/1 and 25/1 with most bookmakers, but if you get in quick, you’ll be able to get 28/1 with 888Sport, which is outstanding value.
