Time for the second major of the season and for the first time the PGA Championship, not the U.S. Open, holds that place in the schedule. Will it make any difference? In one sense, maybe not. The Masters is, of course, always held at Augusta National and the Open Championship always on a links course. As a consequence, those two championships follow certain patterns.
But the U.S. Open and PGA use different types of courses so the winners are as much a result of the venue as tournament trends. What we can say with some certainty is that the PGA’s move from August to May has already produced more chatter.
It remains the fourth ranked major in prestige among PGA Tour betting enthusiasts, but when it was also fourth in the calendar, the world’s interest was on the wane. Now it is a genuine focus of interest.
The New York Galleries
Expect noise and lots of it. For some that will be a positive, but some players with more fragile temperaments might get rattled. Tiger Woods, for example, can expect prolonged adoration and it is a distinct possibility that he can ride a wave of love post-Augusta. At the other end of the spectrum there is Sergio Garcia, whose fractious relationship with American galleries might well be tested to the max.
Recent Major Championship Form
Five of the last six winners of this tournament had fresh memories of contending in a major. Last year’s winner Brooks Koepka was the reigning U.S. Open champion, Justin Thomas (2017) had tied for ninth in the same event and Jason Dufner (2013) had tied for fourth. In contrast Jason Day (2015) and Rory McIlroy (2014) had thrived in that summer’s Open, finishing T-4th and first respectively.
Bethpage Black is something of a monster. It’s a par-70 at 7,436 yards with Poa Annua grass on the greens. That latter feature might be important. Some golfers like it, other hate it. Designed by the great architect AW Tillinghast, Bethpage Black has small greens and places high demands on ball-striking.
In the 21st century the course has held two U.S. Opens (Tiger Woods won by three in 2002, Lucas Glover by two in 2009) and two regular PGA Tour events (The Barclay in which Nick Watney triumphed by three in 2012 and Patrick Reed by one in 2016). Woods and Glover won with 3-under and 4-under respectively with a par of 70; Watney and Reed won at 10-under and 9-under but the par for those events was 71.
The 25-year-old American continues to impress at the highest level without ever being the focus of golf betting attention ahead of the biggest championships. He won twice in his rookie year of 2017, including the Tour Championship. In late 2018 he added a first World Golf Championship (the HSBC Champions), then opened 2019 with victory in the Tournament of Champions.
In the majors he has twice finished sixth in the U.S. Open, was second in last year’s Open at Carnoustie and repeated that result in last month’s Masters. Throw in a runner-up spot at the 2018 Players Championship and he has a log book the envy of many more celebrated players. He is 25/1 to win with Karamba (win and 1/5 top seven place terms).
A golfer cursed with having to play every major knowing his previous failures to win one, but he ought to have decent memories of this course. In the 2009 U.S. Open he opened with 78 but responded with a second-round 68; he missed the cut but that set up two decent efforts in The Barclays. He was T7th at halfway in 2012, finishing T24th, then led by one stroke after 54 holes in 2016 before tying for seventh.
Since the start of 2017 he has never finished outside the top 30 in a major. He tied for fifth in the 2017 U.S. Open, was second in last year’s Masters and has been T5th and T12th in the PGA Championship. He also tied for ninth at Augusta National last month and tied for fourth last time out in the Wells Fargo Championship. He is 18/1 at 888Sport (win and 1/5 top seven place terms) or 15/1 win only at William Hill.
There is plenty to like about the Georgian’s chances this week. The first is that as a 27-year-old he fits nicely into the likely age of PGA Championship winners (the past 10 were in their 20s or 30s). And eight of those 10 champions had arrived at the tournament having won at least once in that season.
Winners also tend to be playing very good golf coming in and Mitchell tied for ninth last time out at the Wells Fargo Championship. He hits the ball a long way and is a tasty 125/1 with MansionBet (win and 1/5 top seven place terms) or 150/1 win only at William Hill.
