Ploughing Championships 2018 Betting Tips and Odds
Mud, tractors, rain, brown bread baking, cows, the Irish President, Mary Berry and more tractors. Can you guess what they all have in common? You’re absolutely correct.
They’re all at the National Ploughing Championships this week in County Offaly, Ireland, which runs until Thursday.
’What on earth are the National Ploughing Championships? And what does this have to do with betting!?’ I hear you cry. Allow us to explain.
What is the National Ploughing Championships?
The National Ploughing Championships is an agricultural show held every September in Ireland on a colossal scale. It draws over 1,600 exhibitors and in recent years has seen attendances close to the 300,000 mark - that’s 6% of the total Irish population!
The event has changed over the years and is no longer just about machinery and farming. A Tented Trade Village, Food Fair and Craft Village are all on site this year to keep other members of the community entertained. Other attendees in 2018 include the Department of Foreign Affairs and Horse Racing Ireland among many others.
The main attractions of the National Ploughing Championships are of course the ploughing contests. The main objectives of these contests are to plough straight and keep things neat and tidy. Firmness, evenness, depth and and uniformity are all surveyed by judges post-plough. You may be surprised to learnt that this is not a farce, and there are rigid rules attached to the competition that must be obeyed at all times.

Who Should You Bet On?
There’s a wealth of worthy options for the Senior Conventional Plough Winner. Don’t let the fact that Paddy Power have listed this as a novelty market fool you - there is definitely some scope to make a bit of profit here.
We tip Eamonn Tracey. He’s a ploughing champion. That’s not some sort of joke - he’s literally World Champion.
Tracey will be a force to be reckoned this Thursday, coming in as favourite at 1/5 with Paddy Power. He won the Senior Conventional Plough contest in Offaly last year.
The Carlow man took the prize in the conventional class at the World Championship held in Einsiedeln, Switzerland earlier this month. Anna May McHugh, Managing Director of the National Ploughing Association of Ireland spoke highly of Tracey and John Whelan (who secured silver in the reversible class):
“This is a fantastic win for both men and Irish ploughing as a whole. Since winning the nationals last year, the men have been working hard on preparing for the worlds in Germany and all their effort has paid off. They have done their country extremely proud. Congratulations and a very well done to both.”
It’s difficult to see anybody else winning at this year’s National Ploughing Championships, so we recommend a higher-stakes bet on Tracey if you’re interested in throwing a bit of dosh on this quintessentially Irish event. If you fancy it however, consider a lower-stakes Gary Simms bet at 4/1.
