Queen's 2019 Tennis Betting: Make Marin Your Main Bet

Quick Tips:

The main draw matches at the Fever Tree Championships, held at Queen's Club in West London, starts on Monday with Marin Cilic defending his title from 12 months ago.

This is far from the strongest line-up for the traditional warm-up event ahead of Wimbledon as the grass court season becomes progressively shorter. With Novak Djokovic and 12-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal both choosing to go straight to SW19 after their Roland Garros exploits, Stefanos Tsitsipas is the top seed at Queen's. As usual, Roger Federer is playing in the German town of Halle.

Tsitsipas won Junior Wimbledon in 2016 but has not reached a grass final in the senior ranks. The Greek was top seed in 's-Hertogenbosch last week but suffered a surprise early exit to Chile's Nicolas Jarry. He faces a testing opener against Kyle Edmund and, even if he gets past the Briton, I don't see him as a serious threat in the tennis betting so am happy to leave the 8/1 with Bet Victor alone.

Juan Martin del Potro is the 6/1 favourite with the best tennis betting sites after going out in the last 16 at Roland Garros. The Argentine is a better player on a quicker surface but, strikingly from a tennis betting perspective, has never reached a tour final on grass. At 30 and still prone to injuries, I see little reason why he should suddenly end that barren run now. And Denis Shapovalov in round one is far from an easy draw.

The second seed at Queen's is Kevin Anderson who returns after missing the clay-court season with tennis elbow. Last year's Wimbledon runner-up has played just three events this year although he did reach the final here in 2015, going down to Andy Murray. But his lack of match practice may well count against him and, even at 20/1 with Unibet, is one to avoid.

Anderson's fellow big server Milos Raonic is a 12/1 with Unibet but pulled out before his Stuttgart semi-final with Canadian countryman Felix Auger-Aliassime on Saturday. A lower back ailment was the reason given with Raonic unfortunate to fall foul of yet another injury. If he is fit, he would be one of the favourites for this but he is not a betting proposition at this moment in time.

Mannarino an intriguing outsider

Interestingly, Unibet and 888Sport have this tournament priced up very differently from most of their competitors with Nick Kyrgios near the top of the betting at 6/1 when he is at least double that price elsewhere. Grass is a surface the Australian enjoys playing on, but his temperament issues are well-documented, and he suffered a shock defeat in his Stuttgart opener to Matteo Berretini. That turned out to be no disgrace with the Italian going on to take the title.

What puts me off Kyrgios is a very tricky first-round clash with Adrian Mannarino. The French left-hander has always been useful on grass but has had the misfortune to bump into top-notchers at Wimbledon. In the last three years he has fallen twice to Djokovic and once to Federer. This weekend he scored his first ATP Tour title win at 's-Hertogenbosch, beating Jordan Thompson after losing six previous finals.

Raonic, del Potro and Tsitsipas would be, on paper, his biggest rivals in the top half of the draw. Given the doubts surrounding each of them, and first-round opponent Kyrgios, I think Mannarino is massively overpriced at 75/1 with Unibet for an each-way bet. Grigor Dimitrov has a good record at Queen's but a recent split with his long-time coach does not augur well for his chances.

The bottom half looks weak with Anderson and Daniil Medvedev, a player who has not shown a great affinity for grass in the past, the top two seeds. Which brings us to tournament fifth seed Cilic who, for the first time in five years, is no longer Croatia's highest-ranked player with Borna Coric now a place above him at 14.

But Cilic has a good record at Queen's, beating Djokovic to take the title 12 months ago after losing to Feliciano Lopez in the final the previous year. He was also victorious in 2012 although that final is best remembered for David Nalbandian defaulting after he kicked an advertisement board and injured a line judge in the process.

The 30-year-old has linked up with former South African star Wayne Ferreira ahead of Wimbledon where he reached the final two years ago. A first-round clash with clay-courter Cristian Garin should be a good warm-up for tougher tests ahead and, if he can find his form on grass, the 8/1 on offer with Ladbrokes might look very generous indeed for an each-way bet. I suggest you take advantage of them.
