Rio Olympics 2016 Betting Preview: Rowing and Sculling
Thursday 11 August will be a thrilling day for rowing fans, who can watch four medal events, all starting within 60 minutes. The early morning nature of rowing will also benefit UK spectators, with the four-hour time difference giving them afternoon viewings to enjoy.
British fans tuning in will be hopeful of success in the men’s coxless pair final, with Team GB chasing London 2012’s benchmark of four gold, two silvers and three bronzes. For anyone seeking odds during the games, bet365 is offering outright betting on all men’s and women’s rowing events.
Men’s Coxless Pair Final A (13:52 BST)
Coming first is the men’s coxless pair final, with Team GB’s Alan Sinclair and Stewart Innes tasked with improving on the bronze claimed by George Nash and William Satch at London 2012. The decision to choose Sinclair and Innes came after the pair snatched bronze during June’s 2016 World Rowing Cup III ahead of Team GB rowers Nathaniel Reilly-O’Donnell and Matthew Tarrant.
As for the odds, bet365 has priced Great Britain at 10/1 outright to win the coxless pair, with Australia on 20/1 and the Netherlands and Serbia level on 25/1. It could be tough for the British to claim gold however, with New Zealand the clear favourites at 1/50.
Eric Murray and Hamish Bond are the men carrying New Zealand’s gold medal hopes in the coxless pair. For both men, a win would retain their London 2012 title. Just recently, the pair added a sixth world championship to their collection in June, making them the men to beat in this final.
Women’s Double Sculls Final A (14:04 BST)
Katherine Grainger and Victoria Thornley were eventually revealed as Team GB’s pairing for the women’s double sculls, having been held back from the main announcement at the start of June. In terms of pedigree, Grainger has competed in four Olympics, claiming one gold and three silvers.
Grainger’s most recent medal came at London 2012, when she won the double sculls with Anna Watkins. For Thornley, this will be an opportunity to help Grainger retain her Olympic title while winning her first. At London 2012, Thornley came fifth overall with her teammates in the women’s eight.
Grainger and Thornley previously earned bronze at the 2015 European Rowing Championships, but the pair are considered a 33/1 outsider for the double sculls. To win in Rio, they will need to overcome Lithuania at 23/20, Poland at 11/5 and New Zealand at 7/2.
Men’s Double Sculls Final A (14:24 BST)
In the men’s double sculls, Bill Lucas and Sam Townsend fell short of a medal at London 2012, finishing in fifth place. This time, it will be Jonathan Walton and John Collins trying to make the podium at Rio 2016.
Rowing fans should pay special attention here, as Walton and Collins finished second in the double sculls while at the 2016 World Rowing Cup III. After leading at the 500m, 1,000m and 1,500m stages, the pair couldn’t quite hold on and lost to Robert Manson and Christopher Harris of New Zealand.
Despite coming close to gold in June, Walton and Collins have been made huge outsiders at 50/1, with New Zealand available at 9/1. Ultimately, the long odds are due to the presence of Croatian brothers Valent and Martin Sinkovic.
The Sinkovic brothers came to prominence by winning their first men’s double sculls crown at the 2014 World Rowing Cup II. They’re also known to often finish two seconds ahead of competitors, prompting bet365 to price them as clear favourites to win at 1/10.
LWT Men’s Four Final A (14:44 BST)
The lightweight men’s coxless four will be the last final of the day, with Team GB’s hopes resting on Chris Bartley, Mark Aldred, Jono Clegg and Peter Chambers. At 20/1 odds, it appears the foursome will face a major challenge to claim gold.
For Bartley and Chambers, they will remember settling for silver behind South Africa at London 2012. For this outing, they will be joined by new teammates Aldred and Clegg. Both are proven rowers, having claimed medals at the World and European championships.
Team GB will look to overcome 6/5 favourite New Zealand after the Kiwis’ secured two World Cup wins in the lightweight four. Switzerland is another leading contender at 2/1, following wins at the 2016 World Cup I and 2016 European Rowing Championships, while London 2012 bronze medallist Denmark is available at 7/2.
