Did Trends Win The Last Ryanair Chase?

The 2019 Ryanair Chase was one of the hottest on record, with multiple Grade 1 winners lining up, but the trends shortlisted just Frodon, Road To Respect, and Monalee.

Road To Respect had won at the Cheltenham Festival in 2017, landing the 2m5f handicap chase, and had gone on to win three Grade 1 chases, including the previous November.

He had achieved a high enough rating too, as had the other trends picks, who though they had not won at the Festival, Monalee had placed over fences there, and Frodon had just won a Grade 2 chase.

Frodon went on to win, with Road To Respect in third and Monalee in fourth. The second Aso had returned from injury that season, and won his first two runs, but then massively disappointed in one of our 'Key Race Trends' (see below) and was disregarded.

How Frodon Won 2019's Ryanair Chase

It was an historic Ryanair Chase as jockey Bryony Frost bounded to victory on Frodon becoming the first woman to win a Grade 1 chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

A year previously, he had been beaten 37 lengths by Balko Des Flos ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies, but under Frost that season the seven-year-old had thrived, winning the Old Roan Chase at Aintree, and the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup and Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham, as well as being second in the BetVictor Gold Cup.

2.50 CHELTENHAM - 2019 RYANAIR CHASE RESULT

  1. Frodon 9/2
  2. Aso 33/1
  3. Road To Respect 9/2

Making every inch of the running, he crowned an epic campaign with the Grade 1 and Festival win his CV lacked, earning a first Cheltenham Festival win for Frost, at the expense of the Charlie Deutsch-ridden Aso.

Last year's Cheltenham Gold Cup fourth Road To Respect took third, ahead of Monalee and former Ryanair Chase winner Un De Sceaux. The 2018 winner Balko Des Flos was the second-last to finish, 7/2 favourite Footpad a further three and a half lengths behind, such was the gallop set by the inspirational winner.
