Scottish Premiership Season Preview, Tips & Analysis

Quick Tips:

Celtic are the clear favourites with the best football betting sites to win a ninth consecutive Scottish Premiership title in 2019/20 after delivering a strong finish to the previous campaign. Brendan Rodgers’ abrupt departure threatened to derail their hunt for glory, but Neil Lennon was parachuted in to save the day and he steadied the ship with aplomb. Now Celtic will aim to equal Rangers’ record of winning nine Premiership titles in a row between 1989 and 1997. Steven Gerrard’s reenergised Gers side are the only team with a realistic chance of stopping them, and it looks set to develop into a fascinating two-horsed race.

Can Rangers Dethrone Celtic?

In 2011/12, Celtic finally ended three years of Rangers dominance by finishing 20 points clear of their rivals and seizing the Premiership title. Lennon was in the dugout, Victor Wanyama was patrolling the midfield and the Hoops were still celebrating a famous Champions League triumph over Barcelona that season. The campaign ended with Rangers being liquidated, reformed and admitted to the Third Division, turning a two-horsed race into an annual procession for Celtic. Since then they have won the Premiership at a canter every season.

Gers returned to the top flight in 2016 and struggled to challenge Celtic, but that all changed when they brought in former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as manager last summer. He overhauled the squad, raided his former club for loan signings and made Rangers extremely competitive once more. They ended up nine points behind the Bhoys, but they were the top scorers in the division and they enjoyed their strongest campaign in a decade. There is now significant pressure on Lennon to keep Celtic at the summit of Scottish football.

The Hoops’ defence has been ravaged by the departures of Mikael Lustig, Dedryck Boyata and Emilio Izaguirre, while Arsenal remain keen on signing Kieran Tierney. Rangers have closed the gap on them and the title race looks set to be a pulsating affair in 2019/20. Yet the Bhoys have far greater financial clout than any of their domestic rivals, and that should be enough to carry them to a ninth straight title.

They have already splashed out £12 million to bring in Christopher Jullien, Bolo Bolingoli and Hatem Abd Elhamed, and more arrivals are likely, particularly if Tierney is sold for north of £20 million. They still have easily the strongest squad in the Premiership, packed full of talented players like James Forrest, Kristoffer Ajer, Callum McGregor, Odsonne Eduoard, Tom Rogic and Leigh Griffiths. Lennon needs to put an arm around the likes of Scott Sinclair and Olivier Ntcham, who underperformed at times last season, but they are still excellent players.

There are also major question marks over Rangers’ ability to hold onto star striker Alfredo Morelos. AC Milan and Eintracht Frankfurt are interested in snapping up the Colombian, who finished last season as the league’s top scorer despite being regularly sent off. Jurgen Klopp has already ruled out loaning Ryan Kent to the Ibrox side for a second season, which represents a huge blow to their ambitions. The transfer window does not shut until September 2, so it might be worth waiting to see what happens there, but right now Celtic look strong enough to just about edge Rangers next season and this is reflected with their short price in the football betting.

Season Specials

The Hoops have been untouchable in recent seasons and they completed a famous treble treble last term. They will now bid to win the Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup for the fourth year in a row, and Ladbrokes is offering a tempting 5/1 on them pulling it off. When you consider that they are odds-on favourites to win each competition, 5/1 with Ladbrokes looks like an attractive price on Celtic to win the domestic treble.

Much of the focus will be on the battle between Celtic and Rangers, but the good people of Edinburgh will be primarily concerned with whether Hearts or Hibernian enjoy local bragging rights. It has been a quiet summer thus far for Hearts and that follows a pretty mediocre campaign last time out. Hibs finished three points clear of their city rivals in 2018/19 and they have since made some intriguing signings, bolstering their ranks with Christian Doidge, Scott Allen, Josh Cela, Joe Newell and Adam Jackson. They look well placed to emerge as the dominant force in the Scottish capital this season at 4/5 with Ladbrokes.

Without Celtic and Rangers

Kilmarnock seized third place last season by virtue of securing a superior goal difference to that of Aberdeen. However, boss Steve Clarke has now left to manage the national team and they are likely to go backwards. Aberdeen, 10/11 with William Hill, finished in the top three five times in a row between 2013/14 and 2017/18, and they will be desperate to secure a return this coming season. Derek McInnes is heading into his fifth full campaign with the club, and Aberdeen are a model of stability. Craig Bryson is a big signing from Derby, while they will hope for more from former Man Utd striker James Wilson. They finished 13 points clear of Hibs last season, and they should be able to hold off Paul Heckingbottom’s men this time around, while also usurping Kilmarnock.

Golden Boot Race

Morelos would make a great option at 6/1 with Paddy Power to finish the season as top scorer if he remains at Ibrox. The Colombian striker is a total liability due to his disciplinary issues, but when he gets going he is unplayable. He boasts the sort of pace, movement and dynamism in the box that allows him to terrorise Premiership defences. Gerrard is a huge fan of attacking football and Rangers were the division’s top scorers last season, so Morelos would certainly enjoy plenty of chances if he were to remain at the club for the season. Eduoard is the favourite for the Golden Boot, but Morelos can outscore him once again if Gerrard can help him keep his temper in check.

Bottom Two Finish

Hamilton conceded more goals than any other team apart from relegated Dundee last season as they finished 10th in the standings. That leaky defence could be their undoing once again this time around and they look like real contenders for a bottom two finish. Newly promoted Ross County are the odds-on favourites in this market, while St Mirren are also priced at just 4/5 with 888Sport, but the 11/10 available with BetHard on Hamilton looks really tempting.
