Did Trends Win The Stayers' Hurdle Last Year?

On the trends, the 2019 Stayers' Hurdle shortlist consisted Paisley Park, Faugheen, and Supasundae - two of those three finishing in the first three places in another Cheltenham Festival classic.

Paisley Park was the 11/8f favourite having his four starts that season, including the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham in January, which had produced four of the last 12 winners, and the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot, where Big Buck's last ran before his three wins in 2009, 2010, and 2011. He ticked every trends box and duly obliged.

The Irish pair Faugheen and Supasundae, who finished third and seventh, also stood out on trends, ticking all the boxes. There was just a query over Faugheen's advanced years, and the fact that Supasundae had not run over 3m that season.

How Paisley Park Won 2019's Stayers' Hurdle

It was a fairytale win for Paisley Park and his owner Andrew Gemmell in the 2019 Stayers' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Unbeaten throughout the season for trainer Emma Lavelle and jockey Aidan Coleman, the star seven-year-old took the lead at the last hurdle and drew away to win by nearly three lengths.

3.30 CHELTENHAM – 2019 STAYERS' HURDLE RESULT

  1. Paisley Park 11/8f
  2. Sam Spinner 33/1
  3. Faugheen 4/1

Listening from the parade ring, Gemmell, blind from birth, could not contain his excitement as the crowds roared his Paisley Park home - one of very few favourites to win at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival.

Sam Spinner, who boiled over when 9/4 favourite in 2018, put a disappointing season behind him with a 33/1 second, the 11-year-old Faugheen digging deep for a distant third, ahead of his Willie Mullins-trained stablemate Bapaume.
