Bob a Festival Banker for Many

There is only one place to start when discussing Turners Novices’ Chase tips and that is with Bob Olinger.

The 2021 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle winner has made a seamless transition to fences this season without having been pitched in particularly deep, although his jumping was not exactly foot perfect at Gowran on his chasing debut.

It was significant that Henry De Bromhead revealed after his Punchestown success in January that the horse had ‘done a lot of schooling’, indicating that his jumping was an area of his game that needed special attention.

It was noticeable how much smoother Bob Olinger was over his obstacles in that Grade 3 contest and that propelled the top-class seven-year-old to a near five-length success over the talented Capodanno.

Bob Olinger is undoubtedly one the most exciting novice prospects in Ireland but so was Envoi Allen when he crashed out in the 2021 Marsh Novices’ Chase.

There is little doubt that Bob Olinger will head to the Turners Novices’ Chase as the most talented contender, but his odds will be prohibitively short and it’s often worth taking on short-priced novices in Cheltenham betting, because hopes can be dashed by the smallest of mishaps.

With that in mind, we’re going to look elsewhere for our main Turners Novices’ Chase tip.

Champs Feared Wherever he Runs

It looks highly likely that Galopin Des Champs will instead head for the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (old RSA Chase) but he retains an entry in this shorter contest and the landscape for this race could look decidedly different if Willie Mullins decides that the Turners Novices’ Chase is a more suitable option for his star novice.

Galopin Des Champs is a short-priced favourite in Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase betting after a Leopardstown chasing debut that simply took the breath away.

This Grade 1-winning hurdler will put his chasing credentials on the line in the Ladbrokes Novice Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival but, assuming he passes that test - and the market suggests he will, then he will head to Prestbury Park as arguably the most exciting novice running at the entire meeting.

• Course form is king: Every winner of this race has at least run at Cheltenham previously. Of those 11 winners, seven had winning form at Prestbury Park.
• Chasing experience is key: 10 of the 11 winners had run at least three times over fences.
• Winning form crucial: Eight Turners Novices’ Chase winners won their final start before heading to Cheltenham.
• Age range: 10 of the 11 winners have been aged six or seven. The only outlier was aged eight, so avoid any five-year-olds when picking a winning horse here.
• Irish dominance: This prize has been won by an Irish horse eight times, four of which were trained by Willie Mullins.
• Safe jumpers only: Only two horses have ever won the Turners Novices’ Chase having fallen in a chase that season - Black Hercules (2016) and Samcro (2020).
• Avoid big price-runners: You don’t get many shocks in this race, only one winner has been sent off a double-figure price (Benefficient in 2013) and six of the last seven winners were 4/1 or shorter.
