Since launching in 2008, Bellator MMA has seen some amazing events and served up some enticing betting bouts. And with a mouth-watering title clash coming up on 20 January 2018 between Douglas Lima and Rory MacDonald, Bellator 192 promises to be another classic opportunity to find value betting MMA.
The championship fight sees Bellator welterweight title challenger Rory MacDonald taking on the current champion, Douglas Lima – with both supremely confident of victory. However, something's got to give. The question for fight punters is: what will it be? Read on to see what experts are saying about betting this contested bout!
Fighting styles can make or break these bouts – and that's a big reason why Bellator 192's main event between these two warriors has fans salivating. It's also why most MMA experts don't expect the fight to go the distance. In one corner, we have 28-year-old Rory MacDonald, nicknamed ‘The Canadian Psycho'.
The name developed thanks to his brutality via both KO and on the floor. In the other corner stands 30-year-old Brazilian mixed martial artist Douglas Lima. This is a man who’s always been a KO artist, with 17 of his 21 amateur wins coming virtue of his opponents hitting the canvas, on top of his 14 pro KO wins.
We know Lima is very likely to try and attack, while MacDonald will be looking to take his opponent straight to the floor and get to work on the submission and ground and pound. Backing the fight to not go the distance looks like a solid bet, given that the clash is predicted to be very aggressive and volatile.
For punters seeking an outright win bet in the bout, the all-round fight style and a strikingly longer reach seems to play into the hands of MacDonald. Lima has dangerous KO power, but MacDonald is a fighter who may be able to frustrate the American and lure him into a ground battle that probably plays against him.
MacDonald is just shy of odds-on with most of the leading online bookies covering the bout, compared to Lima's slightly bigger odds – but he does look the stronger bet. MacDonald wasn't joking when he recently said he'd happily take on heavyweights despite currently being a 170lb welterweight.
And perhaps that's also a hint that he's the naturally bigger man in this fight, something not originally clear from the initial measurements. However, the odds-makers aren't giving much away in the outright win markets, making it tempting to seek more value by backing the method of victory for one of the fighters.
While Lima has sound Brazilian jiu-jitsu grappling skills, he's more famous for his striking, something that's likely to be his best chance of finishing MacDonald. Lima has publicised the fact that despite the hype around MacDonald being a beast, he feels his punching power will shock MacDonald when he feels it.
Backing Lima for the KO with William Hill is therefore appealing if you don't fancy MacDonald to take it to the ground. MacDonald has a record of 19-4, with two losses coming by way of a decision and the other via knockouts. The value call from experts here is that should Lima win, it will come virtue of big punches.
Lima faces a very awkward opponent in MacDonald, a fighter whose reach of 76 inches is a whole six inches bigger than the Champion's. That's potentially going to mean Lima will play a risky game to get inside the Canadian to land the big punches – drawing him into MacDonald's field of wrestling attack.
Therefore, backing the Canadian Psycho to win by submission with a bookie like Paddy Power also looks an appealing wager. Bellator 192 on January 20 has a great looking card – and the Lima versus MacDonald main event is an enticing prospect for fight fans to get their punting teeth into.
This is a fight that could go either way in dramatic circumstances, but placing a double on a MacDonald victory, by way of Submission, with Paddy Power, looks a bet that has the credentials to hurt the bookies.
