- Maria Sakkari to win first quarter – 14/1 with Ladbrokes
- Sakkari each-way outright – 50/1 with Unibet
With no player standing out in 2019, this Women's French Open looks a wide-open tournament as Simona Halep defends her title at Roland Garros.
The Romanian remains without a title this year having suffered to defeats in finals in Doha to Elise Mertens, and Madrid to Kiki Bertens. She has also gone down twice to Marketa Vondrousova, at Miami and Rome, and faces a tough opener against Ajla Tomljanovic.
I could be wrong but her groundstrokes just do not seem to have the same zip as in previous seasons. She is also without a tournament win since splitting with coach Darren Cahill at the end of last year. Halep is the 4/1 favourite with the best tennis bookmakers, but that looks at least a couple of points too short with Petra Kvitova her likely quarter-final opponent.
2019 French Open Women’s Odds
Bet these French Open odds here:
Kiki Bertens claimed her first Premier Mandatory title in Madrid, beating Halep in the final. The Dutchwoman looks to be the best clay-court player in the world at present, although she did suffer a surprise defeat to Jo Konta in the Rome semi-finals.
I have followed Bertens for some years now and she almost reached the final at Roland Garros in 2016 as a 300/1 outsider. She has shown mental fragility in the past, partly caused by a thyroid cancer scare. But the last 11 months have seen her rocket up the rankings with four tournament wins, three coming on hard courts.
Clay is her best surface and my main reservation is that the French Open, as a Grand Slam, does not allow on-court coaching which is permitted in WTA Tour events. Bertens can get down on herself during matches, and a coaching break can lift her out of that slump. That said, she has shown little fear in recent months and her demolition of Kvitova in the Madrid quarter-finals was as good a display as I've seen on the dirt for many a year.
At 9/1 with Ladbrokes , I think she is a fair price to secure her first Slam title. She could meet Konta again in round three with last year's runner-up Sloane Stephens a potential quarter-final opponent. But a repeat of her form in Madrid would see her take this and I think she is the most likely winner.
A Tale of Two Kikis
Karolina Pliskova is the second seed after winning in Rome to claim her first title on outdoor clay since 2015. The tall Czech is not a natural on the red stuff, but she has worked hard to adapt her game to the surface.
That said, the field fell apart somewhat in the Italian capital with all her opposition ranked outside the top 30. While she is respected at 14/1 with William Hill, I feel she is susceptible to a number of solid clay-court players in her section of the draw.
Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova could await in round two with Kristina (Kiki) Mladenovic and Petra Martic possible third round opponents. Cheered on by a rowdy home crowd, Mladenovic stunned defending champion Garbine Muguruza to reach the quarter-finals in 2017 before going out to Timea Bacsinszky.
The Frenchwoman had a dismal end to 2017 and her form barely improved the following year. But she has had a resurgence since linking up with Naomi Osaka's former coach Sascha Bajin in April. Mladenovic gave Kvitova a scare in Madrid before reaching the quarter-finals in Rome. She went out to Maria Sakkari but that was 24 hours after she knocked out in-form Belinda Bencic and Ashleigh Barty on the same day in a rain-interrupted tournament.

Serena One To Avoid
The top quarter looks stacked with world number one Osaka, Victoria Azarenka, 2018 semi-finalist Madison Keys and the great Serena Williams all in there. Williams has struggled with a knee injury and, even at 16/1 with Paddy Power, is best avoided.
Azarenka has shown signs of returning to her best although clay is not her favourite surface, and Osaka and Keys are both out of form. But there is also a real dark horse in Maria Sakkari who reached the semi-finals in Rome after claiming her first WTA Tour win in Rabat. The Greek has had an excellent start to 2019 and beat Bertens on the green clay of Charleston in April.
Sakkari defeated Carla Suarez Navarro to reach round three at Roland Garros last year where she went out to Daria Kasatkina. She is a far better player 12 months on and can spring some more surprises along the way. She is overpriced at 14/1 with Ladbrokes to win the first quarter, and worthy of a small each-way wager at 50/1 with a number of the best bookies.
