Following a wealth of anticipation for it's release, the Planet of the Apes online slot has finally been launched to all the top NetEnt-powered casino sites. Since Andy Serkis embarked in 2011, he’s brought his simian counterpart Caesar to three total striking films set in an alternative history where apes take over the planet.
Now game producer NetEnt has teamed up with 20th Century Fox to launch a brand new slot based on the first film, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and its sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, smashing the two together in an epic dual-screen game, a groundbreaking new slot game format!
Although older cinema fans will fondly remember the original Planet of the Apes movie starring Charlton Heston as an astronaut that lands on the simian planet, only to discover that it was Earth all along (spoiler alert), the new films shifted their focus to the ape known as Caesar.
In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Caesar must escape a laboratory and zoo in order to make a home for his fellow apes. In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, he must protect them against humans encroaching. The plots play an integral part of NetEnt’s brand new slot (here are some others), which opens with a breathtaking cinematic trailer.
Actors from both films appear on the reels, including Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, and Harry Potter’s Tom Felton from the first film. Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke and Keri Russell join in from the sequel. The two reels appear side by side, so when you spin, you’re playing two games at once.
The left hand side shows the five reels of Rise, using daylight colours with shades of silver and gold, while Dawn appears on the right hand side, differentiated by a darker blue to imitate night, with highlights in red. The dual-play layout offers players double the action, and makes for some interesting game features.
With the Rise Wild feature, if a stacked wild covers an entire reel on the Rise section on the left, this’ll be duplicated by the Dawn reels, with the stacked Wild showing up on the same reel. The Dawn bonus will turn all ape and human symbols into the same icon, which can lead to some epic wins.
Each separate play area also offers its own scatter symbols, but you only need to hit three on either side to start triggering the prizes. This comes home in the Dual Feature bonus. This random event will choose one symbol from each side as a Sticky Wild, and can be transferred over if it’s a symbol that appears on both sets of reels.
Planet of the Apes is not the first game that NetEnt has developed based on a film made by 20th Century Fox. The developer previously adapted James Cameron’s Aliens into an online slot. Featuring eerie electronic space music designed to send shivers down your spine, it invited players to join on a hunt for the xenomorphs.
The game brought the movie’s visuals up to date with stunning 3D graphics, a range of multipliers and free spins, as well as the wild symbol which took the form of the Weyland-Yutani Corp logo. NetEnt is not tied exclusively to 20th Century Fox, and also teamed up with Universal Films for the online slot based on Scarface.
The five-reel, 20-payline slot used classic scenes from the movie, which were shown during certain bonus rounds or triggers. Just like the life of the film’s anti-hero Tony Montana, the game is bursting with excitement and energy, and is filled with special features including scatter and wild symbols and bonuses.
This includes a series of Wild symbols that can be stacked on the reels, with a full reel activating a bonus round like Nudge Wild Respins or a spectacular Pick and Win game. The software developers also teamed up with Trey Parker and Matt Stone to bring their animated TV and film series South Park to life as a slot.
It features the four main characters of Stan, Kyle, Eric and Kenny along with many of their famous catchphrases and sayings. The slot perfectly manages to capture the crude, unadulterated humour that has made South Park one of the most-loved adult cartoons on air.
