Player Wins £1.36m Progressive Jackpot on 25p Mobile Spin

One triumphant UK player managed to win £1.36 million from a mobile bet on Playtech’s popular Gladiator progressive slot. She won a grand total of £1,365,870 after making an initial deposit of just £30. She was playing for 25p per spin when she activated Gladiator’s progressive jackpot bonus round!

The 47-year-old mother of two, known only as Angela, hails from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. Speaking of the life-changing win, which happened on May 31st, she said:

"I saw the amount and felt like I was in a dream. I just felt sick and didn’t know what to do with myself. It’s just completely amazing and will change everything for us."

As soon as she realised she had won, she woke her husband, who had been working a night shift the day before. The win means they will both be able to quit their jobs, which is ironic for Angela as she works at a job centre.

Playtech's Gladiator Jackpot Approaches Record

Angela’s recent win is the biggest mobile progressive jackpot payout for Playtech’s Gladiator slot. However, the largest win on that title came back in October 2013. Another British punter, who remained anonymous, managed to net just over £2 million when playing at Winner Casino, one of the top rated online UK casinos!

Rise of the Gladiator

The winning online slot is based on the 2000 film Gladiator, directed by Sir Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and the late Oliver Reed. It went on to win five Academy Awards at the 2001 Oscars, including 'Best Picture and Best Actor' for Crowe. Reed sadly passed away during the middle of filming, causing the scriptwriter John Logan to rewrite the ending. It was one of the first instances of digitally replacing one actor’s face on to another.

Gladiator Online Slot

The online video slot was released in 2009, featuring five reels and 25 paylines. Many of the icons are borrowed from the film, as is Hans Zimmer’s haunting soundtrack. It has a return-to-player ratio (RTP) of 94.1%, with a maximum in-game jackpot of 5,000 times the initial bet. However, the main attraction is the progressive jackpot that Angela managed to win.

It can be won only by triggering the Gladiator Jackpot Bonus game, which happens when you land three of the iconic Gladiator helmet wild symbols of the middle three reels. Players then have to select nine boxes, which will reveal helmets in bronze, silver, or gold. If you manage to choose all nine gold helmets, the progressive jackpot is yours for the taking.

Playtech’s Fortunes

Gladiator is one of Playtech’s most popular progressive jackpot slots, according to James Frendo, the company’s casino director. Upon hearing about the substantial win, he said:

"We pride ourselves on offering the best-performing games including a huge variety of progressive jackpot titles and the industry’s biggest and best progressive jackpots, and this win is no exception."

Not only was it fortunate for the player, but also for Playtech itself. In August 2014, Playtech invested £10 million in the casino brand she won with in exchange for a 33.33% equity share. That casino allocated the funds to be used for its innovative marketing strategy. The deal also saw Playtech win a long-term contract from the operator to supply its full range of software and game titles to its online casino.

Mobile Jackpot Wins Continue To Rise

Angela’s win is one of many that show mobile punters are just as likely to win the progressive jackpots. Earlier this year, a player from the Isle of Man managed to net over £8 million playing Microgaming’s Mega Moolah slot, breaking previous records for mobile jackpots. Prior to that, the record had also been held by a Mega Moolah player, who managed to pick up £7,968,311.26 in August 2016.

Before this, Playtech held the UK record for the largest mobile progressive jackpot payout, thanks to a win in January 2016. A player from Glasgow visited Gala Bingo on her Android phone, and spent £4 on Jackpot Giant. The librarian was lost for words when she won, walking away with the collective prize of £4.5 million. Playtech’s COO Shimon Akad said:

"To claim the UK mobile slot jackpot record is fantastic and proves we lead the industry when it comes to progressive jackpot games."
