Playtech Teams Up with DC Comics

Software provider Playtech has revealed a blockbuster deal with DC Comics, which will allow it to develop officially licensed casino content based on iconic comics. 2016 is proving to be a big year for DC fans – not only will Playtech’s first DC slots be released, but highly anticipated DC movies Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad will also be hitting the big screens.

DC Slots Coming in 2016

Playtech looked back to DC's archive when developing the first of these new slots. After the launch of an adaptation of the Batman TV series from the 1960s, the retro theme will continue with slots based on Superman I (1978) and Superman II (1980).

The final slots scheduled for launch in 2016, Green Lantern (2011) and Man of Steel (2013), bring us back up to date. With the release of Batman v Superman in March, it's likely that Man of Steel will be the more hotly anticipated of the two. Playtech has drawn on extensive resources to ensure that its DC slots are designed to the highest standards, and will reportedly be using all of its studios to aid in the design, development and deployment of the content.

Filling the Marvel Void

Playtech CEO Mor Weizer spoke of what he hopes will be “a long and prosperous relationship” with DC Comics and film studio Warner Bros. Weizer also pointed out that the release of branded DC slots would ensure that software partners “benefit from the best omni-channel gaming content the market has to offer”.

This a well-timed deal for Playtech, whose partnership with Marvel has proved lucrative. A number of Marvel slots based on cinematic and comic book properties have been released, although things seemed to slow down after the Iron Man 3 movie and companion slot came out. Few details have been made available, but Disney's acquisition of Marvel in 2009 may have had some impact on the planning of the company's various partnerships.

Taking Control from Microgaming

DC and Warner had previously worked with rival software developer Microgaming, leading to the creation of video slots based on two titles from the critically acclaimed Dark Knight Trilogy. The slots, which were adapted from The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), are popular at Microgaming casinos such as NetBet and Casino Room.

Playtech has successfully seized the opportunity to be the next software provider to make use of the DC licence. The timing isn't accidental – the release of the Man of Steel movie in 2013 marked a pivotal moment for DC Comics, and its expansion towards building a cinematic universe to rival that of Marvel.

DC Comics will no doubt continue to be one of the most influential names in cinema over the coming years, with Wonder Woman and Justice League just two of several titles scheduled for release between now and 2020. If Playtech's first range of slots are as impressive as they're predicted to be this year, the software company could find itself in a prime position to develop gaming content on these and other future titles.
