UK High Roller Winner Lets £42,670 Ride at Roulette Table

Jake Cody must’ve been feeling pretty lucky Sunday night. Riding the high of a four-way deal that gave him a £42,670 share of first place in a £2,200 High Roller event at the 2018 partypoker LIVE UK Poker Championships, the Team PokerStars Pro decided to go double-or-nothing at the roulette table.

After battling through a 116-player field, Cody found himself in the final four with Ben Longstaff, Martin Olali and Andrew Garland. The fellow UK natives decided on a split with Longstaff taking £44,220 ($62,120) Olali taking £43,225 ($60,722) and £37,105 ($52,125). But Cody wasn’t done there...

Double or Nothing

With a crowd quickly formed around him, the poker pro bet it all on black. He had to convince Dusk Till Dawn Casino owner Rob Yong to let him pull off the extraordinary bet and Yong agreed, personally tossing the ball himself as shown in the recorded video below: (Warning: may contain NSFW language)

As the ball rolled to wild chants of “black, black, black” the lucky gent’s prayers were answered as it landed on Black 22 and he ended up walking home with a total of £85,340 ($119,882). The crowd (and Cody) exploded in shock and celebration capping off a truly remarkable night for the longtime poker player.

Winning Experience Comes at Good Time

Cody is no stranger to gaming, as the Englishman has made more than $4.4 million in tournaments (not including $600,000 online). Back in 2010 Cody made his name known and launched a prosperous career by winning the European Poker Tour Deauville main event title.

While he hasn’t since topped the $1.2 million prize he scored that day, he did complete a triple crown additionally scoring a World Series of Poker bracelet and World Poker Tour title, far more than most pros could hope to claim.

The win came at a good time for Cody as he’s recently ridden a roller coaster last few years with a tough breakup coming in 2016 that emotionally impacted his play. In a vlog released nine months ago, the 29-year-old said he’d struggled with depression in some form or another:

“Maybe it was mild depression, maybe it was full blow. I don’t know how to gauge it. I wasn’t in a good place, so it was super hard to make videos when you’re in that state of mind. It was super hard to do anything.”

Luckily Cody was able to get his head right and get back in the game, putting him in the right frame of mind and giving him the ability to make a major risk and have it pay off. With things back on the upswing for the poker vet, only time will tell what plans lie ahead for his career and life after.

Cody Not the First to Let It All Ride

Despite the boldness of his decision, Cody was far from the first to attempt it. Ashley Revell, another UK gambler, made the stunning choice to sell all of his possessions including his house and clothes to amass £76,840 ($135,000) and put it all on red at a roulette table at the Plaza Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Revell ended up winning and doubling up his entire personal value. All this after making a bet some would consider insane. Regardless, he won and eventually met his future spouse on a trip across Europe he paid for with winnings.

Examples like these definitely show perspective gamers that while it takes a considerable amount of boldness and an even greater amount of luck, the benefits to letting it all ride can be quite profitable should the cards, or roulette ball, fall in your favor.
