PartyPoker Nixes Inactivity Fees Thanks to Player Feedback

As we approach the season of goodwill, partypoker has embraced the idea of giving back by nixing its inactivity fees. Following a consultation with players and members of Team partypoker, the online poker site has decided to abolish charges that have been in place since 2007!

Where Did the Fees Come From?

Under the old regime, any account that had been inactive for six months would be charged a small fee. If the account balance was at zero, then that would be the end of it. However, if the inactive player still had some funds laying around, the site would take a small amount each month until one of two things happened:

  • the account balance hit zero and there was nothing left to take;
  • the player reactivated their account by playing a raked hand/tournament or making a deposit.

In the event the player embraced the grind once more, partypoker would refund any money that had been taken. However, following a review of the policy, the suits at partypoker HQ have decided to remove the fee as part of its new pledge to players.

Alongside the removal of withdrawal fees, partypoker is working to make its platform as appealing to casual players as possible. In light of this, charging recreational players who by their nature play sporadically was deemed to be a bad idea.

Player Power Makes partypoker Player-Friendly

Commenting on the move, recent partypoker team member Patrick Leonard said that the fee was frustrating for players. Being one of the best online tournament grinders in the world, Leonard knows what it’s like to play day after day and the idea of charging players a fee when they need a break is something he’s happy to help change:

"I think removing this fee altogether will be widely welcomed in the poker community. It shows that partypoker really is making good on its promise to take players’ opinions into account,” Leonard told the partypoker blog."

Doubling down on this, partypoker Chairman Mike Sexton said that, under his watch, listening to feedback in all its forms is what’s going to shape the site and drive it forward in the coming years. Sexton’s comment on partypoker’s blog read:

"Listening to players is central to everything we do at partypoker. That means absorbing all comments and complaints, whether in forums, chat rooms or on social media platforms, in conversations with our customer service team or face-to-face at live events."

Small Changes Help Long-term Growth

Alongside the removal of fees, the party brand recently introduced software that will randomise the seating process. Tapping into the industry-wide trend that aims to remove the fear factor newbies feel when they first start playing, the software means players never know who they’ll be sat with.

In essence, what the new software has done is to make the strategy of “bum hunting” (i.e. only sitting at tables with known weak players) impossible. While some would suggest that tinkering with these measures harms the bottom lines of seasoned players in the short term, operators such as partypoker are looking at the bigger picture.

In order for the online poker economy to remain buoyant, there needs to be a constant supply of fresh blood for the top poker sites. By removing inactivity fees and making it harder for casual players to become targets, partypoker is helping to keep activity levels high. In turn, this means more potential ways for seasoned grinders to bolster their bankrolls and, overall, a more vibrant poker community.
