Following another record-breaking event in Las Vegas over the summer, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) has decided to offer up more money in Europe this October. With news that the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) is heading to the Czech Republic's King's Casino, the organisers have decided to add another €1m to the mix.
Prior to the announcement, the WSOPE Main Event was promising players at least €4 million in return for paying the €10,350 entrance fee. However, with the WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas surpassing all expectations, hopes are high ahead of the WSOPE event set to kick off later this year in October and finishing in November!
As well as the Main Event in Vegas prompting the change, Leon Tsoukernik, King's Casino owner, has confirmed that the number of early registrations has been more than encouraging. In fact, it seems the number of runners is already set to push the prizepool beyond the new improved guarantee.
Beyond the Main Event with its new level of value, the 2017 WSOPE will offer a total of 11 bracelets and more than €20 million in guaranteed prize money. Among the selection of side events, the High Roller for One Drop will provide another layer of big money excitement in the Czech Republic.
As well as helping raise more money for the One Drop charity, the €111,111 tournament will see the world's richest players compete for a few million in cash. At this stage, 90 players have already paid the €11,111 deposit in order to reserve their place in the marquee event.
With a 111-player cap, the early signs are that the High Roller for One Drop will sell out and, potentially, offer places to alternates as players hit the rail. However the organisers decide to play it, the likelihood is that this tournament will be another huge success and bring another layer of excitement to the 2017 WSOPE.
For those wanting to become a part of the new €5 million WSOPE Main Event, 888poker will be hosting a ton of online satellites. As the official partner of the WSOPE, the online poker site will not only see its branding on display throughout, but will be in charge of providing a few added extras for those involved. To kick things off, a schedule of satellites will take place online.
Following this, 888poker, one of the internet's top poker sites, will provide some additional entertainment for its qualifiers during the showdown in the Czech Republic. Despite taking a break in 2016, interest in the 2017 WSOPE hasn't wavered. Between the enhanced Main Event, the High Roller for One Drop and a series of side events, the action looks set to be better than ever.
Although it will be a few weeks before the final numbers are in, expectations are that the Main Event will attract more runners than it did in 2015. On that occasion, US pro Kevin MacPhee made his way through a 313-player field to take home €883,000 after beating David Lopez heads up.
Despite being filled with a solid number of entrants, the field was markedly smaller than the 2011 showdown that saw Elio Fox overcome 593 players to take home €1.4 million. Although the 2017 WSOPE Main Event might not top that figure, the €5 guarantee will certainly help drive added attention.
Indeed, with the series in Vegas proving that live poker is now returning to the golden days of the early Noughties, there's every chance we could see 400+ players take part in one of Europe's most prestigious tournaments thanks to the boosted guarantee prize-pool!
