Since the demise of the BDO there is now only one ‘World Cup of Darts’ (no matter that the World Darts Federation might claim) and that’s the PDC World Darts Championship. 96 of the best darts players in the world gather over the course of the next two-and-a-half weeks to decide who is the best arrow-chucker in the world. They will of course be cheered on by hundreds of spectators at the Alexandra Palace and a global audience of millions.

Here we look at the runners and riders for this year’s tournament, hopefully helping you to decide on which bets to place at the best PDC World Darts Championship betting sites.

The Favourites

For once, Michael van Gerwen is not the favourite for this year’s competition. He is currently the second-favourite behind last year’s winner Gerwyn Price. The legendary Dutchman is priced at 4/1 with most of the best UK bookmakers. Meanwhile, Price, the finest darts player Wales has produced since Leighton Rees, is priced at 7/2 with bet365.

Price faces a battle though as not many first-time winners have managed to retain their title the following year. Phil Taylor did it in 1996, Adrian Lewis in 2012 and Gary Anderson in 2016, but retaining the PDC World Darts Championship is something even legends such as Raymond van Barneveld, Peter Wright and even MVG himself have all failed to achieve. Despite being joint-favourite Price has history working against him.

Naturally, MVG is short-priced, as he has been for every single tournament since his first win in 2014. It’s a surprise that that man who has inherited the title of the world's best player from Phil Taylor has only won the PDC World Darts Championship three times, having been beaten by Taylor in the 2013 final and Wright in the 2020 final. Van Gerwen fell in the quarter-final last year to Dave Chisnall and was whitewashed in the process.

The best World Championship betting tipsters are split between Price and MVG, but the smarter money may end up being placed elsewhere.

The Other Contenders

When it comes to more outlandish PDC World Championship Darts Betting tips, it’s a surprise that most online sportsbooks and betting apps don’t seem to think that the winner will be anyone other than MVG or Price. Third-favourite Peter Wright is priced at 7/1 with William Hill, which surely must be a value bet.

Wright was crowned world champion in 2020, beating MVG in the final, and it’s shocking that his price is not a little tighter. The flamboyant Scot (one of only two Scots to win the PDC World Darts Championship, the other being Gary Anderson) is a crowd favourite and a crowd-pleaser, although he buckled under the first time winner’s curse last year. His third-round exit to the unfancied Gabriel Clemens came as a huge surprise - as Clemens became the first German darts player to reach the round of 16 at Alexandra Palace.

2018 Champion Rob Cross – the man who ended Phil Taylor’s final fairytale campaign – is a long shot at 22/1 at most online sportsbooks. His record ever since winning the 2018 tournament has been pretty poor. In 2019 he lost in the fourth round, in 2020 he exited in the second round and in 2021 he lost to Dirk van Duijvenbode in the second round again. This explains why Cross is such a long-shot and it’s difficult to find any reason to back him.

The Surprise Packages

Priced just a little beyond Wright we find eighth seed Jonny Clayton, who the best darts betting sites value at around 13/2. Clayton has had a very fine season indeed, winning The Masters, the Premier League of Darts and the World Grand Prix in which he defeated Price 5-1. Despite his recent success Clayton has never been beyond the third round at the PDC World Darts Championships, and this will be his sixth attempt. In terms of form, there is no better player in the world currently than Clayton, but as his record at Alexandra Palace is so poor that betting on him carries a great deal of risk.

James Wade is the fourth seed but is currently priced at 40/1 at all leading sportsbooks. At 38, Wade is getting on in years and this will be his 18th PDC World Darts Championship appearance. His best days were in 2012 and 2013 when he reached the semi-finals, but he hasn’t been beyond the fourth round since 2017.

Belgium’s Dimitri van den Bergh is seeded fifth and more reasonably priced at 16/1. He reached the quarter-finals in 2018 and 2020 but his record in most major tournaments does not give bettors confidence. He won the World Matchplay in 2020 and reached the final in 2021 but other than that, first and second round exits are common for van den Bergh.

Former champion Gary Anderson comes in at 22/1 with Betfair after defeating Adrian Lewis in his opening match of the tournament. It’s now six years since his last title win and although he is ranked sixth in the world, he has had a poor season. He was beaten by Price in last season’s PDC though so he may be worth an each-way bet if you enjoy longer shots for your PDC World Championship darts betting tips.

The Other Contenders

There will of course be interest in the performance of Fallon Sherrock, the first female to win a match at the PDC in one of the biggest ever upsets at the PDC World Darts Championship. Sherrock has slipped to 94 in the global rankings and number two in the female rankings, but she has qualified for the PDC World Darts Championships via the Women’s Series Order of Merit. She is down to play Steve Beaton in the first round, the current world number 43 and the BDO World Championship winner in 1996. She is priced at 150/1 in outright World Darts Championship betting at most bookmakers.

Legend Raymond van Barneveld is another long-shot at 150/1. He plays Lourance Ilagan in the first round and is now ranked 68th in the world. Barney has not gotten as far as the quarter-final since 2018 and even announced his retirement in 2020 - only to reverse it the very next day!

The Verdict

For this year’s PDC World Darts betting tips, it is hard to see beyond MVG or Gerwyn Price. Both are in decent form and surely at least one of them will be standing at the oche on the day of the final. If the PDC World Darts Championship was decided on form alone though, Jonny Clayton would be the best bet, but Clayton tends to fade in front of huge crowds so it is a risky punt.
