Fantasy sports betting is legal and regulated in Indiana, so it’s no surprise that market leaders DraftKings and FanDuel have high-profile daily fantasy sports partnerships in the state. DraftKings is the official daily fantasy sports partner of the NFL, with access to NFL branding. FanDuel is the official fantasy sports partner of the Indianapolis Colts, with in-stadium signage.

Indiana was one of the first states to legalize daily fantasy sports in 2016, designating it as a game of skill. At the same time, it also banned daily fantasy betting on amateur sports. The NCAA is opposed to all forms of college sports gambling and is based in Indianapolis.

Indiana bettors can bet on daily fantasy in several sports, including pro football (NFL), pro basketball (NBA), pro baseball (MLB) and motorsports (NASCAR). DraftKings, FanDuel, Yahoo and Fantasy Draft each have licenses to offer daily fantasy sports contests.

Indiana Horse Racing Betting

Indiana has two horse tracks offering live racing. Indiana Grand in Shelbyville offers thoroughbred and quarter horse racing from mid-April to mid-November, highlighted by the Indiana Derby. Harrah’s Hoosier Park in Anderson offers live harness racing from late March through late November and is home to the 2020 Breeders Crown. Both tracks also offer a full menu of simulcast races from other tracks.

Indiana also has off-track betting locations for wagering on horse racing and sports. The Winner’s Circle locations are in Indianapolis, Clarksville and New Haven, all owned by Caesars Entertainment, which also owns Indiana Grand.

Indiana Sports Betting History & Laws

The U.S. sports betting landscape changed dramatically on May 14, 2018, when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), giving each state the right to legalize sports betting.

Indiana lawmakers did not wait long, and less than a year later, Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a bill that made Indiana the 10th state to legalize sports betting. Language allowing online/mobile sports betting was at one point stripped from the bill, then reinserted before passage. The bill designated the Indiana Gaming Commission to regulate and adopt sports betting rules.

The state’s first brick-and-mortar sportsbooks opened for business on September 1, 2019, and Indiana’s first online sportsbook opened about a month later. In 2020, more than a dozen retail and six online sportsbooks were operating in the state, with more on the way. The bill allows each land-based casino to have up to three partnerships (skins) with online sportsbooks. The bill applies only to sports betting and does not allow online casino gambling in Indiana.

The legal gambling age in Indiana is 21 and bettors must be physically located within the state to place a sports wager.
